Coryanthes speciosa

Coryanthes speciosa

Orchids are wonderful plants. They produce flowers of extraordinary beauty, but there are some that attract more attention than others. One of them is the Coryanthes speciosa, which is native to the rainforests of South America.

There is not much for sale, unless they are specialized nurseries, but this does not mean that it is difficult to care for. 😉

Our protagonist is an epiphytic orchid whose scientific name is Coryanthes speciosa. It grows in South America, specifically in Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana Framcesa, Surinam, Guyana, Venezuela, Peru and Brazil, at heights above sea level of about 100 meters. It has a wrinkled pseudobulb from which elliptical green leaves sprout, and a basal racemose inflorescence (set of flowers), hanging 45cm long. The flowers are aromatic, giving off a smell similar to that of mint.

As a curiosity, you should know that it is often associated with ants, to be more successful with pollination.

What are their cares?

  • Earth:
    • Pot: substrate for orchids (pine bark).
    • Garden: the ideal is to place it on trees with a little moss.
  • Irrigation: 3-4 times a week in summer, and every 4 or 5 days the rest of the year.
  • Subscriber: from the beginning of spring with a specific fertilizer for orchids.
  • Multiplication: by division in spring.
  • Planting time: in spring.
  • Rusticity: does not support frost. The minimum temperature it supports is 13ºC.
