Do you know the Drago de Canarias?

Dragon tree in Tenerife

In the Canary archipelago we can find gardens with a great diversity of plants, due to the different microclimates that exist there. From tropical plants like coconut palms to somewhat colder climates like magnolias. But without a doubt, if we have to highlight one above all the others, it is the Canary Islands dragon tree, an endemic plant of the region whose beauty is spectacular.

The Drago belongs to the agave family, that is, to the agavaceae. Its scientific name is dracaena draco, and can be had in subtropical gardens around the world. In addition, it is reasonably resistant to cold, being able to withstand temperatures of up to two degrees below zero as long as it is for a short period of time. If you live in a colder climate you can keep it indoors while there is a risk of snowfall.

This is a very long-lived plant. In fact, in Tenerife grows one that is estimated to be more than a thousand years old. Likewise, it must also be added that it is rather slow growing; characteristic shared by all plant species that are not in a hurry to be adults.

If you want to have a Dragon Tree in your garden, you should know that its most suitable location is in where it gets the most direct sunlight possible. In semi-shady corners, its leaves could be fallen due to lack of light.

So that your root system does not have problems of any kind, it is highly recommended that mix the soil you have in your garden with volcanic clay. This will prevent the water from remaining puddled for a long time when watering, which could be harmful to the Drago.

It is an exceptional plant for low maintenance gardens thanks to its resistance to drought and pests. And, as if that were not enough, it is not necessary to prune it, except for the dry leaves.
