How to Prevent Diseases in Cactus?

Although, as we have seen previously, cacti and other types of succulents are quite resistant to diseases and disorders, it is important that we prevent their appearance for the correct development of our plant.

It is for this reason that today we bring you some tips for preventing disease in cacti and other succulents:

  • It is important that we do not go overboard with irrigation, since excessive watering could help the appearance of fungi and end up rotting the roots of the plants. We must control that the land where our plant is grown drains properly and that it does not have any type of obstruction in the drainage.
  • In case of diseased plants we must try to eliminate them to avoid the proliferation of fungi, or pests. In the event that you have a very important or difficult-to-find plant, we must try to save it before eradicating it.

  • If we suspect that one of our plants is diseased and we discard it, it is important that we also get rid of the soil where it was found. If it was in a pot, we must also throw away the soil and sterilize the pot.
  • It is important that we avoid planting any type of cactus or succulent plants during the winter, since any type of alteration or damage to their roots could rot with water and low temperatures.
  • If when changing or transplanting a plant you begin to notice that the root ball or roots are abused or broken, we must wait between 10 and 15 days to be able to water it again.
  • During irrigation, we must avoid watering the leaves or flowers of the plant, as this could favor the appearance of fungi and their spread.

Hello, I have a question, the point is that I have some cacti in pots, when I looked at one of them I realized that it is very soft, like it is rotting and in reality it is very small ... I would not like it to die ... but I don't know what to do to heal it. I changed the pot again and its little root looks good, but the cactus is so soft that it looks like a jelly inside., you could tell me what I can do, I'll be waiting for your answer ..Thank you.

      Hello Ruth.

When a cactus gets soft, there is nothing to do.

For the next one, the ideal is to plant it in a pot with holes in its base, with light soil that drains the water very well (such as a mixture of peat with perlite in equal parts), and water only when the soil is dry.

      Greetings.
