Aeonium arboreum

Aeonium arboreum

El Aeonium arboreum it is, in all probability, one of the most cultivated succulent plants. Its rosettes of leaves are so decorative that they could well pass for artificial flowers, although of course and fortunately they are not 🙂.

The maintenance of this beautiful plant is not complicated at all, to the point that if it is planted in the garden we can almost forget to water it; and if, on the contrary, we leave it in a pot, its water needs will also be minimal. So if you are looking for a species that is really easy, then I will tell you everything you need to know about this Aeonium.

Origin and characteristics

Aeonium arboreum 'Atropurpureum'

Our protagonist is a succulent non-cactus native to the Atlantic coast of Morocco. Its scientific name is Aeonium arboreum, although popularly it is known as always alive or Aeonian. It grows forming rosettes of 15-20cm leaves, with green or brownish leaves depending on the variety and a height of up to 90cm. The flowers are grouped in yellow inflorescences of up to 15cm, and are terminal, that is, after blooming they dry up.

The growth rate is not very fast, but you do get to see differences from month to month if it is well cared for.

I have this plant that has lengthened its stem and discolored its leaves. Should I give it a pruning? If so, at what time? I have it on my terrace in a pot and it has direct sun from noon. Thanks in advance.

      Hello Luz María.

It is better to put it in an area where it gets direct sun all day. The fact that its stem has lengthened and that its leaves have lost color is because it is accusing the lack of light.

Also, if the roots are sticking out of the holes in the pot, you will need a larger one. If this is the case, you can change it now (being a strong plant, if it is not flowering there is no problem in transplanting it in summer).

      Greetings.
