All about the Washingtonia

Washingtonia will spin

All the washingtonia They are a genus of palm trees composed of two unique species: Robust Washingtonia y Washingtonia will spin. Although your last name may create confusion, Robust Wasghintonia has a thinner trunk, while the Washingtonia will spin it is wider. Between them they tend to hybridize very easily, creating the filibusta washingtonia which present characteristics very similar to those W. robust.

After this brief introduction, let's move on to what's interesting. How are these palm trees cared for? How do they reproduce?

washingtonia

The Washingtonia are native to California reaching Mexico. They have a very fast growth up to 10 meters high, but in cultivation they rarely exceed 8 meters. They are ideal plants for low maintenance gardens, including dry gardens, as they resist drought very well. Of course, it will grow faster if you have water regularly; in fact, during the first two years of age it is advisable to water them from time to time to get the palm tree to reach an interesting height in a short time. How many meters are we talking about? It is said that they can grow one meter per year, impressive, right?

It adapts to all types of floors, including calcareous ones. However, it cannot stand waterlogging, which can cause its roots to rot. It is also very rustic: the Robust Washingtonia supports up to -5º, and the Washingtonia will spin up to -10º.

Robust Washingtonia

As the leaves dry, they remain attached to the trunk for a long time. If you do not like them, you can prune them without problem towards autumn, when the temperatures begin to drop.

In the gardens can be used both in lineups and in groups of two or three, putting them for example near the pool, or at the entrance of the house. Although it is not essential, they can be paid from spring to late summer, thus making them grow even faster.

These palm trees they reproduce very well by seeds, which only have to be kept in a glass with water for 24 hours to later sow them in individual seedbeds.

Do you have any in your garden?

    good.
More than a year ago I bought a palm tree, and since then it has only grown 3 leaves….
and lately the leaves have become dry at the tips. Even the whole leaf dries completely.
I have already paid it, I changed the soil, I put a little water in it, I changed the place, in the shade to the sun and nothing. I don't want him to die completely, too. I have fumigated it, cut the tips, I have poured soapy water on it and I don't know what else to do…. It makes me sad to see my palm tree dying like this.
Please give me some advice to save my plant.
    Thank you.

      Hello Dianilla.
Palm trees sometimes take a little getting used to. There are many species that, although they are perfectly cared for, only take two or three leaves a year.
In the case of the Washingtonia, it has to give them direct sun. Also, they have to be watered only when the soil is dry, otherwise the roots will rot. Generally, they should be watered three times a week in summer and 1-2 a week the rest of the year. If you have a plate underneath, remove any excess water within 15 minutes of watering.
You can pay it with a specific fertilizer for palm trees (you will find it already prepared for sale in nurseries), following the instructions specified on the package.
      A greeting.

Hi there! advice please! About a month ago I bought a pair of 1.60 high palms and I put them in the entrance of my house every day I water them and they do not compose anything, on the contrary they are drying, they cut the leaves because there was a lot of air and they left aside I imagine that they did not grab root, so that is why they cut the leaves below, but everything is drying, I think it is dying in fact there are only a couple of leaves left, please help me!

      Hi Lore.
I recommend you space out the risks a lot. They are plants that resist drought, but not waterlogging.
They must be watered twice a week in the hottest months and every 7 days the rest of the year.
      A greeting.

NO PROBLEM IF I PUT IT CLOSE TO THE HOUSE? YOUR ROOTS DO NOT RAISE THE BENCHES OR FENCES?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Lu.
Palm tree roots are not invasive, but do not put them "glued" to the wall or too close to the ground because they will not have room to grow. The ideal in Washingtonia is to leave a separation of at least 1m between the wall and the trunk.

      A greeting.

I would like to know, since I plant your seed (coquito) in the ground, how long it will take to reach at least 3 meters in height.
and in somewhat clayey soils its growth is normal?
    Thank you

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Alberto.
If the Washingtonia is planted early in the ground and watered every 2-3 days in summer and every 5-6 days the rest of the year, it can grow 50cm a year. And if it is also paid in spring and summer with specific fertilizers for palm trees following the indications specified on the product packaging, it can grow from 60 to 100cm / year.
      A greeting.

Very good explanation about the Washingtonia palm tree, I have about 20 seedlings, and 8 began to dry up, which could be the cause. Thanks….

          Hi John.

It may be some parasitic fungus, such as phytophthora. Treat them with a copper-based fungicide spray. Spray them well, and also the soil.

Another possible reason could be excess water. Washigtonia are sensitive to waterlogging.

If you have doubts, tell us. Greetings!
