Anthemis tinctoria

Anthemis tinctoria

There are herbaceous plants that look so much alike that it's no wonder we've given them the same common name. It is what happens with the Anthemis tinctoria, which is known as yellow chamomile since it produces flowers very, very similar to that of chamomile or chamaemelum nobile. But unlike this one, our protagonist does not have medicinal properties. Although it is no less interesting for that.

It is lively biennial, which means that it lives for two years, and it is resistant to drought as it is native to the Mediterranean. So having a garden or patio with this beautiful plant is a joy. Discover it,

Origin and characteristics

Anthemis tinctoria

The plant I am talking about is a lively herbaceous plant with a biennial cycle that found in the Mediterranean region and in western Asia. Its scientific name is Anthemis tinctoria, although as we said it is known as yellow chamomile.

Grows to a height of 60 centimeters, and has a feathery foliage of serrated, bi-pinnatifid and bright green leaves which give off a very pleasant aroma. The flowers are yellow, and are very reminiscent of those of daisies. These sprout during the summer.

Apart from being used as an ornamental, it produces a red wine with a buff yellow color and orange hues that is used in the industry.
