Araucaria, the storied pine

Araucaria

In various parts of the world we find very unique plants, such as the Araucaria, better known as the storied pine. Conifers are plant beings that have colonized much of the planet, including coastal areas, where our protagonist is usually found.

Nowadays they are frequently used to decorate gardens, something that does not surprise us because, Who can resist its beauty?

Araucaria plants

The Araucaria is native to Australia, Chile, Brazil and Argentina. It is a plant capable of reaching an incredible 70m in height. It has a conical shape, with branches distributed in horizontal floors, and a trunk whose thickness does not exceed 40cm. This interesting feature was surely the one who gave it its popular name: storied pine. It has a very slow growth, but on the other hand ... it is quite long-lived, since it can live around 1000 years: There is nothing!

It grows without problems in mild climates, with frosts down to -5ºC. If it is colder in your area you can have it inside your home, in a very bright room, away from drafts, as these could "burn" the leaves.

Araucaria heterophylla

Although we are facing a very tall plant, due to its growth rate and that it will not take up too much space, it is ideal to have in medium or large gardens. It will look great as an isolated specimen, at a distance of about 2-3 meters from any construction.

It is interesting to plant it in rustic style gardens, always in full sun, since the Araucaria will provide that touch of elegance that only it can give. But, yes, It is highly advisable to do preventive anti-mealybug treatmentsespecially in spring and summer. If the environment is very dry, whether you are indoors or outdoors, one way to avoid being affected by them is by spraying the foliage twice a week.

With these tips, and watering it once every seven days, your Araucaria it will look beautiful for many, many years.

      Hi carmen.
It is likely that in a nursery in your area they have. If not, I recommend you buy it in an online store.
      Good luck.

Hi Monica, I have an Araucaria pine in a pot inside my house (it receives a lot of light because it is next to the window and receives sun in the afternoons. It is approximately 40cm high and has quite a few branches, in fact every year it branches in the higher than XNUMX. The species I have is not the same as those shown in the photo.

The plant is doing very well and it is already an essential part of my home ... it has its own exclusive space ...

Initially I wanted to have it as a bonsai .. but I have read that it is not a suitable type of plant for the required jobs, in fact its trunk is not thick at all.

What I have noticed is that the branches grow quite large, and each layer (of three or four branches at the same height) tends to come into contact with the ones below. That is why I have been thinking if it is possible to pinch, shorten the older branches a little.

I would like to make it look more conical, because the upper branches are longer than the lower ones.

I would appreciate your advice in this regard ...

    Greetings from Venezuela.

      Hello Oscar.
If you just want to trim them a little, yes you can do it without problem, in autumn or early spring.
