What is ardisia like?

It is a plant native to warm areas of Asia and Africa belonging to the botanical family Myrsinaceae. Grows as an evergreen shrub 40-70cm tall with leathery, alternate leaves, up to four inches long, and bright green. The flowers are grouped in panicle-shaped inflorescences or hanging raceme. The fruits are red drupes 6mm in diameter that finish maturing in autumn-winter.

Its growth is rather slow, so it is very easy to have its development well controlled by pruning. In addition, it can be kept in a pot throughout its life without problems.

How do you take care of yourself?

Are you liking the ardisia? If so, here are some tips so you can show it off from day one:

  • Location: you must place it in a room where there is a lot of light coming from outside.
  • Substratum: it must have very good drainage to avoid root rot. A good mix would be universal growing medium mixed with 30% perlite or clean river sand.
  • Irrigation: three times a week in summer, and every 4 days the rest of the year. Use soft, lime-free water.
  • Subscriber: from spring to summer it should be fertilized with a liquid fertilizer for plants, such as guano for example, following the directions specified on the package.
  • Transplant: every two years, in spring.
  • Multiplication: by seeds and cuttings in spring.
  • Pruning: can be pruned if necessary in late winter, removing dead, diseased or weak branches.
  • Rusticity: withstands cold down to -1ºC.
