The ferns fascinate me, especially the arboreal ones, but the one that I am going to present you now is not far behind. Its scientific name is Lastrea fern-female, and it is one of the short-growing species that has the longest fronds (leaves): up to 120 centimeters.

In addition, it is a very, very beautiful light green color, which will make any shady corner of the garden have a certain tropical flair. Learn more.

Origin and characteristics

It is a deciduous fern native to the shady and humid forests of the northern hemisphere whose scientific name is Lastrea fern-female, although popularly it is known as female fern, pit fern, fern or minor female fern. Its fronds are up to 120cm long, and are pinnate, green in color. The sori or groupings of sporangia are on the underside of the fronds, and are oblong-arcuate.

Its growth rate is medium; that is, it is not very fast but it is not slow either. You will see changes as the months go by 🙂. Anyway, if you want it to grow a little faster, we recommend taking care of it in the way we tell you below.

What are their cares?

  • Subscriber: in spring and summer it has to be paid with organic fertilizers, such as guano, compost, manure or other homemade.
  • Multiplication: by spores and division in spring.
  • Rusticity: resists cold and frost down to -5ºC.
