Fall bulbous plant care

Pink tulip

Bulbous plants have a very special "something". Most only flower for a few days a year, but they are so pretty that you can't help but ignore them. If we add to that its easy cultivation and maintenance, it is not surprising that sometimes we want to start a beautiful collection of these flowers.

But so that everything goes well and you don't have any problems, I'm going to tell you what are the care of autumn bulbous plants, that is to say, of those that are planted in the aforementioned season but that bloom in spring.

When are they planted?

The common lily is a bulbous marigold

As we anticipated, the autumn bulbous plants are planted ... in autumn. But it is important that we know that each species has its ideal planting period, so we are going to see which is which of the most popular flowers (months of the northern hemisphere):

  • Allium: from September to February.
  • Amarilis: from October to March.
  • Anemones: from September to November.
  • Saffron: from February to May.
  • Azucena: from September to December.
  • Cala: from September to February.
  • Crocus: from September to January.
  • Cyclamen: from August to November.
  • Freesia: from September to January.
  • Fritillaria: from September to January.
  • Galanthus: from September to November.
  • Iris: from September to January.
  • ixias: from September to January.
  • Hyacinth: from September to January.
  • Grape hyacinth: from September to December.
  • Ranunculus: From October to december.
  • Scilla: from September to November.
  • Tulip: from September to January.

And how?

The bulbs are planted in a very simple way, always putting the narrowest part up. If for example it is 3cm high, we will plant it at a depth of 5-6cm, and we will leave a distance between bulbs of 10-15cm (it can be more, but I do not recommend it if what we are looking for is to get a very dense »carpet») .

How are they cared for?

Fritillaria imperialis Rubra

They are cared for as follows:

  • Location: outdoors, in full sun or in semi-shade.
  • Irrigation: 1-2 times a week.
  • Earth:
    • Pot: universal growing substrate mixed with 30% perlite.
    • Garden: fertile, with good drainage.
  • Subscriber: from when they begin to sprout until their flowers wither with specific fertilizers for bulbous plants following the instructions specified on the package.
  • Maintenance: after flowering the bulbs can be removed and stored in a cool, dry place until next fall or left where they are without watering.

Enjoy your fall bulbs!
