Begonia as houseplants

Begonia

All the Begonia are plants most of which behave like seasonal plants in cool climates, since they are native to tropical climates and do not support frost. It is for this reason also why many people, and more and more, use them to decorate the interior of their homes at least for a few months.

Their low cost and their beautiful and decorative flowers make Begonias one of the most popular plants both to have outside in semi-shade without direct sun, and to keep indoors in a very bright room.

Both in the Northern Hemisphere and in the South, these little plants do not leave anyone indifferent. They are very easy to acquire, either by seeds, cuttings or by buying adult plants. Although they do not resist, the majority, the cold, perfectly adapted to living in indoor conditions.

At the time of acquisition we can transfer it to a larger pot, with a good substrate that facilitates drainage. Being a plant that we are going to have indoors, we usually have it with a plate underneath always. Well, we understand that this way, at the time of watering, the furniture where we have it is not stained, but we must bear in mind that the roots cannot bear having water that is puddled for a long time. Thus, to avoid problems, when 30 minutes have passed after having watered them, we will discard the excess water (or we will use it to water other plants).

The ideal place for the Begonia that we will have indoors is that room in which a lot of natural light enters, but is sheltered from drafts. For example: the dining room, the living room or the entrance of the home.

One thing to keep in mind is that dark-leaved Begonias don't need as much light as those with green leaves. So if you want to have one, but you are not sure that the location you want to put it has enough light, opt for one that has brown leaves, for example.

What do you think of these plants? Do you have any indoors?
