Ficus microcarpa bonsai, advice on its cultivation

Ficus microcarpa bonsai

One of the most recommended tree species for all those who want to immerse themselves in the world of Bonsai is the Ficus microcarp. Ficus, in general, are already resistant plants that tolerate pruning, even the most drastic. But there are some that are very sensitive to cold; on the other hand the F. microcarpa it supports temperatures a little below 0 degrees, so in warm temperate climates it can be kept outside all year round.

But of course, it is not enough to place it in the best area of the patio for it to grow well, but also it will be necessary to give it a series of care. Which are? The ones that I am going to tell you next.

Ficus microcarp

Although small, the bonsai of Ficus microcarp it is still a tree. Trees, and indeed all plants, should always be located outside, unless the winter weather is too cold for them. Of course, there are species that can be grown indoors throughout the year, such as labels on nurseries as "Indoor Plants" (Calathea, Dypsis lutescens, ferns, etc.). But so that our protagonist can grow without problems, It is highly recommended that it be kept in a very bright outdoor area, but protected from direct sun and strong air currents.

Irrigation will have to be frequent, once every 2 days in summer, and every 4-5 days the rest of the year. To water it, we can make a few holes in a cap of a plastic bottle, put it on it, and water. This way the water will come out with the right intensity.

Another important point that we cannot forget is that of pruning. The training prunings, that is, those with which we intend to give a defined design and style to the tree, will be carried out at the end of winter, as soon as the risk of frost has passed. On the other hand, pinching can be done throughout the season. For this we will grow 4-8 pairs of leaves, and remove 2-4 with scissors.

The wiring in the Ficus is not usually necessary, but if you consider that there is a branch that does not grow in the direction it touches, you can wire it in spring, trying that the distance between turns is always the same. Check it from time to time to prevent the wire from penetrating the branch, leaving a mark. After three to four months, it is advisable to withdraw it.

With these tips, your Ficus microcarpa bonsai will look spectacular 😉.
