Brighamia insignis, endangered Hawaiian plant

Brighamia insignis

In Hawaii, specifically on the island of Kauai, we find a plant, which for many, is one of the most beautiful. Its beauty is such that human beings have wanted to have it in their collection and / or taking ground away from it, and now unfortunately it is very difficult to find it in its habitat.

Meet the brighamia insignis.

It is a very beautiful plant, which can reach a meter or a meter and a half in height. Its trunk is succulent, which means that it is there where it stores its water reserves. It has fleshy green leaves, and it keeps them all year round thanks to the mild climate in Hawaii. In winter it opens its precious scented yellow flowers, which are composed of 5 petals that are not completely divided.

As we know, many tropical islands are volcanic in origin, and Hawaii is one of them. This is a fact that must be taken into account if you want to have a Brighamia in the yard, since it will need a substrate universal peat mixture with a high percentage of volcanic rock (or clay balls, if we don't have a way to get it). Being an endangered plant, you should know that it can only be bought in nurseries or specialized online stores.

For its correct cultivation we will need the temperature never drops below 10 degrees centigrade, since otherwise we would lose it. Also, humidity is important: it needs a humid environment, but if the thermometer accompanies it, it can tolerate it being dry for a few weeks. Irrigation has to be occasional, when we see that the substrate is completely dry.

We must place it in a location where it is protected from direct sunlight, but that there is a lot of light. It will not grow well in shady areas, as it will develop more than necessary the trunk and leaves, becoming weaker and weaker.

Did you know the Brighamia insignis? What do you think?
