Vriesea, a tropical bromeliad for the home

Specimen of Vriesea carinata

Bromeliads are tropical and subtropical plants that have such ornamental value that they are one of the most used to decorate fortunate gardens that enjoy mild climates, and homes. Choosing one is very difficult, but if someone asked me I would say that one of the most beautiful is the Vriesea.

The colors of its leaves are very striking, so much so that it will be really easy for us to combine them with ... everything. Would you like to know how it is cared for? Let's go there 🙂.

Origin and characteristics of the Vriesea

Vriesea altodaserrae

Our protagonist is a native plant of tropical America known as Vriesia or Indian feather that forms rosettes of recurved leaves, with smooth margins, with a length of 30-100cm and a height of 40-60cm depending on the species. It produces an ensiform floral scape, which is composed of scarlet bracts (modified leaves that protect the flowers).

Its growth rate is medium, but we should not be concerned, since its root system is superficial and harmless. In fact, it is perfect to have in a pot throughout its life.

How do you take care of yourself?

Would you like to take care of your bromeliad in the best possible way? Write down these tips:

  • Location: indoors, in a very bright room without drafts.
  • Humidity: it has to be high. During the warm months it should be sprayed with lime-free water every 2 days; the rest of the year it is better not to do it as the leaves could rot.
  • Irrigation: fill the rosettes and water the soil a little once or twice a week with lime-free water.
  • Substratum: You can use universal growing medium mixed with perlite in equal parts.
  • Subscriber: during spring and summer it can be paid with foliar fertilizer following the indications specified on the package.
  • Multiplication: by seeds or separation of basal shoots in spring-summer.
  • Rusticity: does not stand the cold. Its ideal temperature range is between 15 and 25ºC.

Enjoy your plant.
