Origin and characteristics
Our protagonist is an endemic shrub from the Mediterranean region. It is known as oleander, and its scientific name is Bupleurum fruticosum, and it is characterized by reaching 3-4 meters in height. The leaves are whole, glabrous, leathery and oblong or linear-elliptical. In summer it produces large terminal umbels of yellow flowers, which attract a lot of attention both to people and beneficial insects in the garden (such as bees).
Its growth rate is medium-fast; that is, it grows about 5-10cm per year more or less, depending on the climate and the care it receives. To achieve this, we explain how to take care of it.
What are their cares?
If you want to have a copy, we recommend you take care of it in the following way:
- Location: outside, in full sun. It cannot live well in semi-shade.
- Earth:
- Pot: you have to fill it with universal growing substrate alone or mixed with 30% perlite.
- Garden: the land must be calcareous.
- Irrigation: it is necessary to water an average of 2-3 times a week during hot and dry summers, and a little less the rest of the year.
- Subscriber: from spring to summer it is highly recommended to pay with ecological fertilizers.
- Multiplication: by seeds in spring. Sowing must be done in a seedbed.
- Plagues and diseases: It's very tough. However, if the growing conditions are not adequate, it can be affected by mealybugs, red spider mites or aphids. They are fought with specific insecticides, or with diatomaceous earth (you can get it here).
- Rusticity: withstands cold and frosts down to -7ºC.
