The bonnet, whose scientific name is euonymous europaeus, is a deciduous plant (loses its leaves in autumn-winter) native to central Europe that grows up to 3-6 meters in height. Despite what it may seem, it is not invasive: its trunk thickens only 20cm in diameter and its roots are not strong enough to break pipes or destroy soil.
Its leaves are lanceolate, opposite and have a weakly toothed margin. The flowers are not of great ornamental value: they are pale green in color and are grouped in clusters; instead, the fruit is a fleshy red capsule with four segments that contain the seeds.
