Meet the Butia, one of the most cold-resistant palm trees

butia capitata

Finding cold-resistant palm trees that have pinnate leaves is not easy. Most of those that withstand frost and snowfall have them in the shape of a fan, like the Trithrinax or the chamaerops, but finding that species that we like is not an impossible task. In fact, there is a genre that not only withstands the cold but is also very decorative. Your name? butya.

Butia are slow-medium growing palms, ideal for decorating small or medium gardens, or even to have in large pots for many years. Do you want to know them?

Characteristics of the Butia

Butia archeri, one of the smallest of the genus. It reaches a height of 2 meters.

The Butia genus comprises 19 species distributed throughout South America, especially Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina. Its leaves are pinnate, arched, green or bluish-green. depending on the species. The trunk also varies a lot: it can be either very short, barely 30cm, or it can be 10 meters high.

The flowers appear grouped in inflorescences on a 33-55cm long rachis, with up to 100 flower stems. The fruit is oblong in shape, being yellow when ripe. Inside there is a single seed.

How do you take care of yourself?

Butia are one of the easiest palm trees to care for. If you don't believe me, follow our advice and tell me 🙂:

  • Location: outdoors, in full sun or semi-shade. It can also be indoors in a room where a lot of natural light enters, but due to its rusticity whenever possible it is better to have it outside the home.
  • Soil or substrate: it must have good drainage. It grows without problems in calcareous soils. If it is grown in a pot, it is advisable to mix 60% black peat + 30% perlite + 10% earthworm humus.
  • Irrigation: frequent in summer, somewhat scarcer the rest of the year. It will generally be watered every 3 days during the warmer months, and every 3-4 days the rest of the year. We must avoid waterlogging.
  • Subscriber: During the warm months, it must be paid with a fertilizer for palm trees, or with liquid organic fertilizers (such as guano) following the instructions specified on the package.
  • Planting / Transplant time: in spring.
  • Rusticity: supports up to -10ºC.

Enjoy your palm tree.
