All the maculata begonia they are very beautiful plants, but very treacherous. You take care of them as well as you know how, and one day, without further ado, they start to get ugly until they finally wither. However, since they are very cheap, year after year we try again and again to outlive us.
So that this is the last time you have to buy it, I'm going to give you a few tips about your care.
Our protagonist is characterized, not only by having a very beautiful flowering, but also by its leaves, which are very decorative. It is native to the tropical jungles of South America, and of course, being tropical, it does not resist the cold. In fact, a temperature below 10ºC can be fatal. So that. How can we make it survive the winter? This way:
Place it in the best place
This plant needs a lot of light to grow, but not direct sun. Likewise, it is also important avoid putting it near the window, since its leaves could be damaged by the »magnifying glass effect» (it occurs when the sun's rays enter through the glass and impact directly on the leaf, causing damage).
Also keep it away from drafts, both cold and warm, otherwise the tips could start to dry out.
Water it, but little
One of the main causes of plant death is overwatering. To maculata begonia you have to water it 2 times a week in summer, and 1 every seven days the rest of the year. If you have a plate under it, remove the water after 30 minutes of watering.
Fertilize it so that it grows healthy and strong
From spring to late summer, it is highly recommended fertilize it with a mineral fertilizer for flowering plants. If you can't find it, you can use guano, or a universal plant compost. Follow the instructions that are specified on the package, and you will see how well your plant grows.
Change it pot in spring
Once a year, in spring, it is advisable to change the pot. As it is a slow growing plant, you can use one that is about 3cm wider than the previous one. Use a porous substrate, such as black peat mixed with perlite in equal parts, this will greatly avoid waterlogging, which could seriously affect you.
I hope these tips have served you and you can, thus, be able to enjoy your maculata begonia for years 🙂.
P0R PLEASE I WOULD LIKE MORE INFORMATION ON OTHER VARIETY OF BEGONIAS.
Hello Juana.
All Begonia species are cared for more or less the same: two or three irrigations a week in summer, and one or two a week the rest of the year. They should not be in the sun, but if they are indoors, they must have a lot of (natural) but not direct light.
In this Another item there is more information.

Good afternoon Monica, I would like to know what fruit tree I can plant in the patio of my house that measures 3 square meters, but I have the disadvantage that the sewer runs through my patio and therefore a tree with little root is required. I live in Colombia in a city between 30 and 35oC- Thank you.
Hello Jose.
For your patio, I would recommend a mandarin, a guava or a Feijoa.

HELLO MONICA I HAVE FOUR COLORS OF BEGONIA MACULATA, COMMONLY CALLED IN URUGUAY WINGS OF ANGEL.
I HAVE THEM IN A LARGE POT THE FOUR PLANTS AND THEY ARE DIVINE BUT THANK YOU FOR ALL THE INFORMATION .BLESSINGS .
Hello 🙂.
Have you changed them pot? I ask you because if they are in it for a long time, the earth runs out of nutrients and the plant cannot flourish. Therefore, if you have not done so, it is highly recommended to transfer them to a somewhat larger pot in spring, with new substrate, and then continue to fertilize them until the temperatures drop with fertilizers for flower plants.

Hoola! wanted to know the difference between begonia maculata and tamaya? please. Thank you!!!
Hello cativfcat.
There is no difference 🙂. Begonia maculata is the scientific name, and tamaya is one of the common names (the other is coral begonia).

Hello, I wanted to know the difference between tamaya begonia and coccinea begonia? Thank you. Greetings.
Hi, Diana.
They are very similar, so much so that it is impossible for me to distinguish them. Sorry.
A greeting.
Hi Monica, we have had a begonia maculata for years with considerable vertical growth that we cannot control. We have several rods that grow tall and with few leaves, without branching or giving flower. We have cut some for cuttings and they work well. We would like to know why it does not branch or the growth is not leafy if not purely vertical. Thanks!
Hello Sonsoles.
This plant has a growth like this, vertical and little branched. 🙂
You can blunt the main stem, that is, remove the newest leaves, and thus you will get it to remove lower stems.
Greetings.
