Caring for the Water Stick

Water stick

Some time ago I bought a small Water stick that since then decorates my living room. He is in the center of the small table and has always been generous to me. However, when for no apparent reason the leaves start to turn ugly, I wonder what is happening to it.

Sometimes it is that he has a pest that is bothering him; others that it has run out of space in the pot to continue growing. But in any case, I am going to tell you everything about this magnificent plant so you know how to take care of it.

Do you want a water stick or log from Brazil? Here you go 1 log at a great price.

Characteristics of the Water Stick

For those who have never seen one, the Water Stick is a plant of tropical origin It is common to see it indoors, although it can also be found outdoors. It is a perennial plant whose leaves are long and hanging with the novelty of a small yellow stripe in the middle. Another aspect for which it stands out is its thick trunk, brown and with rings.

Water stick

Although it is not very frequent, in some cases the Palo de Agua, also known as Brazil log or Brazilian stick, blooms. It is not a common thing but it happens and then a flower with an attractive scent appears. Of course, to see them you have to have an adult and large plant because only those that follow these characteristics flourish. In addition, the Palo de Agua gives flowers only twice in its life.

Brazilian Trunk Care and Tips

Water stick

The palo de agua, or trunk of Brazil, is a plant that is very easy to grow. However, depending on the case, always depending on the weather and the area where you are, it can be a bit demanding. For this reason, we are going to tell you how to take care of it:

Where is the water stick placed?

One of the central aspects for the Palo de Agua to develop in optimal conditions is do not expose it to direct sun because then it burns. Ideally, place it in a place where receive natural light but not direct avoiding very dark places because then the leaves turn brown.

On the other hand, you should know that the ideal temperature is between 10º to 25º C. In very cold environments, the plant stops growing as the leaves fall. In addition, the ideal is a humid environment because remember that it is a tropical plant.

When is it watered?

The Water Stick does not need much watering the soil must remain moist. It will be enough to water it two or three times a week. If you discover that the leaves turn brown and begin to fall, it is likely that it lacks water. Another alternative is to spray the leaves with a spray when they begin to dry. If, on the contrary, watering is excessive, the leaves will look too yellowish.

How to play the water stick?

The Water Stick can reproduce by cuttings or through logs already pruned from those that grow roots. The best seasons to do this are spring and fall. In addition, it is recommended to transplant it every two years, filling the pot with a high-quality universal growing medium, such as the one from Flower that you can buy here.

When to pay it?

Moreover, in the summer it is best to apply liquid fertilizer for green plants, like the one from Compo which you have available here. Follow the instructions for use so there is no risk of overdose.

How to transplant the water stick?

So that the plant can continue to grow, if you see that it is in a pot that has become somewhat small, you will have to transplant it into another that measures about ten centimeters, or fifteen at the most, more than the one it has now, both wide as high. Here's how to do it step by step:

Basically what it involves is filling the new pot with universal substrate to a little less than half or so, carefully removing the plant from the old pot, and planting it in the new one. Try to keep it in the center, and at a good height.

What problems can it have and how to recover the Water Stick?

The trunk of Brazil can have diseases

Pests and diseases of the trunk of Brazil

Although the Palo de Agua is a quite resistant plant, if we are careless with the irrigation and / or with the subscriber it can be a victim of the attack of plagues and have diseases like these:

  • Red spider: it is a mite of about 0,5 millimeters of red color that feeds on the cells of the leaves. Like spiders, they produce webs by which they move from one leaf to another. Symptoms are discolored or yellow spots, in addition to the cobweb.
    It is eliminated with Chlorpyrifos.
  • Mealybugs: they are insects that can be flakes like limpets or like cotton that settle on the green leaves and stems, causing loss of color and deformations.
They can be easily removed with a brush dipped in soap and water, or with an anti-cochineal insecticide (on sale here).
  • Aphid: they are parasites of about 0,5cm that feed mainly on the newest leaves and flower buds. They cause loss of color in the affected area and, in severe cases, favor the appearance of the bold fungus or sooty mold. This, although it cannot cause the death of the plant, weakens it a lot.
It can be controlled by putting yellow adhesive chromatic traps near the Water Stick (for sale here).
  • Septoria: it is a fungus that produces grayish-brown spots on the leaves. It is treated with a systemic fungicide.

Burned water stick

You may also have these other problems:

  • Appearance of brown spots: it was probably cold. It must be protected from temperatures below 12ºC.
  • Fall of leaves: if they have yellow edges and brown tips, it is because it needs water; On the other hand, if the lower ones fall and are apparently healthy, it is because it has been exposed to sudden changes in temperature (from the nursery to the house, for example). It is not a serious problem: it will acclimatize on its own.
  • Leaves with dry tips: it can be for several reasons: low humidity, excess heat or lack of water. You should water a little more and avoid exposing it to drafts.
  • Yellow and limp leaves: excess watering. The substrate must be allowed to dry between waterings. Generally, it will be watered about three times a week in summer and every 3-4 days the rest of the year.
  • Leaves remain small and deformed: lack of fertilizer. It must be paid in spring and summer with a liquid fertilizer following the instructions specified on the packaging.
  • Stem rot: excess watering. It can also be from cold. It is recommended to cut to the chase, impregnate the base with rooting hormones and plant it in a pot with a very porous substrate, such as pomx or black peat mixed with perlite in equal parts.
  • Loss of leaf color: lack of light and / or fertilizer. It must be taken to a brighter room and paid regularly.
  • Brown burns on the leaves: it has been exposed to the sun directly. It must be kept away from the sun and from the windows.
Palo de Brasil is a very popular houseplant

Right now, Christmas Eve, my stick of water, which must be twenty years old or so, is in bloom. I never peat it or added any chemicals to it. I am in awe of its exquisite fragrance and the beauty of its abundant flowers.

Hello, I have seen your website and I tell you that I have a stick of water in flower, for 20 years she has lived in a corner of my dining room with a glass window, she is my best friend, I love her and I even speak to her, if I could I would send you photos, the only thing you have to do is water it from above between the leaves, that is what I did for 20 years and only once a week at its root ...

Hello my stick of bracil almost all the stems are dry, only two are left I do not know if it is good to cut all the ones that are dry and transpantle it. What do you advise me?? Thank you

      1.    Monica Sanchez said

        Hi Margie or Hello Margarite.

Yes, cut off the dry parts. But then you have to know if you are thirsty or on the contrary you have excess water. To do this, you must look and check how wet the earth is, not only the surface but also more towards the bottom. To do this, you can use a thin wooden stick, and if when you extract it, it comes out with a lot of adhering soil, it is because it is very wet.

Also, if you have the plant in a pot without holes, or with a plate underneath, it is very possible that it is having a bad time due to the constant contact with water. And it is that, although it is known as "stick of water", it is actually a land plant, which cannot live and should not be cultivated as an aquatic plant.

If you have any doubts, please contact us.

        Greetings.

FOR 9 YEARS WE HAVE A STICK OF WATER AT HOME, AND IN REALITY IT IS A VERY UNSTABLE PLANT, ALWAYS DOING THE SAME, THAT IS TO SAY IRRIGATION, FERTILIZATION AND OTHER CARE, SOMETIMES IT IS EXPANDED AND OTHERS DYING, THAT IS WHERE I TRY CHANGE IT OF PLACE GIVE IT LESS OR MORE, SPRAY IT, BUY A BIGGER MASETA AND NOTHING. LAST YEAR I THOUGHT I WAS LOST IT THAT I TAKE IT TO MY MOTHER-IN-LAW TO PLANT IT IN HER GARDEN AS THE LAST TRY TO SAVE HIM. AND IF THEY KEPT IT IN THE MASETA, I CHANGE THE EARTH AND NOTHING ELSE, THE AIR CHANGE SEEMS THAT IT DID IT GOOD AND A MONTH LATER IT RETURNED TO MY HOUSE, IT WAS EXPLENDED IN THE WINTER IN A SMALL PATIO THAT I HAVE WITH MY OTHERS PLANTS, BUT IT DECLINED AGAIN NOW IN SUMMER, SO I WENT IN TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS THIS TIME.

I'm disappointed because I can't find a way to make the plant look healthy, it's already the 3rd try. I read and apply the advice but I don't get it

They comment on the little irrigation but I have seen the best water sticks in containers with only WATER ????

    1.    Manuel Corona said

Exactly! My Water Stick was about to die until I put the pot in a container of water. Apparently, this gives the soil moisture (which is necessary for the type of plant). If you water it, the root will rot. If you only moisten with the container, it hydrates, making the plant green.

      1.    Monica Sanchez said

You have to be careful with these things. Dracaena are plants that do not like to have a waterlogged substrate. It is true that the Palo de Agua likes environments with high humidity, but you have to control the amount of water that is added to the container and not leave it permanently full.

I bought around 2008 a medium-sized Brazilian stick on the recommendation of a friend who harmonizes houses through fen shui but I ended up at my girlfriend's house, it was about two years and its trunk began to turn half brown and its leaves They changed their color yellow, so it was decided to bring it back to my house to see if the change of place suited it and after a few months it happened, its leaves turned green and when it was 6 years old it began to flower once a year between the months of October and November, last year I no longer bloom in those months until this week of April, and now in her two little arms, she looks beautiful.

Later we bought another three about five years ago, planted in the same pot that later we had to separate because they were too tight, and my mother-in-law gave me two other small ones, all planted in a pot. The funny thing about all this is that of the six Brazilian sticks, four are blooming, at the same time, imagine how my house will smell!

    Greetings =)

This past summer I took them out indoors with other indoor plants, but now it is fall and it is starting to get cold and I will have to move them inside my house. Thanks and great tips !!!

Hello, I think that 3 or 4 times a week is a lot of watering, I water mine twice a month and they are very well! Try watering them less, maybe it starts only once a week, the leaves can be seen brown and yellow also due to excessive watering.

A year ago they gave me a stick of water with the leaves grown hard for a while and overnight the leaves disappeared and no leaves have come out again, only the trunk remains, I keep watering it but I can't get it to come out sheets. Why is it that I can do to make it grow leaves again

    1.    Gloria said

Yes, it is true there are two different species. I have the one with a thin trunk and a month ago I bought two seedlings with a thick trunk. I thought it had to do with the age of the plant: the older the thicker trunk and vice versa, but nothing to do with it, mine is 12 years old and its trunk is finite, while the ones I bought are small and thick.

Hello, I have a stick of water in a pot with soil (there are 3 really, the 3 were planted together). The weird thing is that the piece where it is always has a rotten smell! It is sooo unpleasant, like musty…. The soil is not too wet, the stem is not soft…. I do not know what it could be…. It's like the earth is stinky. The plant is green but has some brown leaves underneath. I have it for about 5 months, the largest trunk should measure about a meter and the other 2 are smaller. I have never fertilized it and I water it like every 3 days. Sun comes but not direct. What do I do with that smell? Now I left it outside to ventilate a bit…. the room was very dirty. (I have put it in different rooms, but the smell always appears….)
    Thanks for the help!

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Renata.
When the substrate gives off an unpleasant odor, it is usually a bad sign. My recommendation is that you change it for a new one (you can use black peat with perlite for example) before the situation worsens.
If you have a dish underneath, drain the water after every watering to prevent fungus growth.
      Luck.

    2.    Gonza said

Hello, you should make some holes in the bottom of the pot so that the water can drain and it does not rot if it is overdone…. later I recommend that you buy some saumeriums! heh 😉

  15.   Monica Sanchez said

    Hey.
The Palo de Agua (Dracaena fragrans) is a plant that lives better on land, and not so much in water. Over time, the leaves turn yellow when they are in a flooded ground, and their trunk can rot. When this happens, you can choose to cut the soft part of it and plant the other in a pot with a very porous substrate so that it emits roots.
    Luck.

  16.   Claudia said

Hello, the bad smell is because the holes in the pot have been clogged, you must change the pot or make several holes so that it can drain the water, as the water is half stagnant, it is rotting, I advise you to change the soil, and that other you spread on the floor to dry with the som and then you can use it

Hello!!! My water stick is 10 years old, and its second flowering has ended in November 2015, and it has come out like a tuft of leaves, which I could prune, since it is reaching the ceiling already, and, as it remains for autumn for its pruning, I wanted to know if, by necessity, I could remove the leaves from above, which have come out like I can remove it without damaging the plant. And, that pompadour with its own stick, should I put it in water or on land? It is inside the plant and gives it natural light all day. thanks greetings !

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Leila.
You can prune it now, in fact, as it is a tropical plant, it is better to do it in good weather than in autumn 🙂.
Put it in a pot with porous substrate (vermiculite, for example), and in a few weeks you will have a new plant.
      A greeting.

      1.    Maria said

Hi Monica, I would like to know how to prune the water stick. I have it in the office, it is beautiful but it has already reached the ceiling. Does the cut have to be straight or oblique? can it be with a common knife? the cut is exposed? the cut part is the one that is left in water so that it sprouts? Thanks!

        1.    Monica Sanchez said

          Hello Maria.
You can trim the stem that is touching the ceiling a bit. The cut is better that is oblique, since it will heal better. You can do it with a common serrated knife if the stem is green.
Put healing paste on it to prevent fungus from entering.
The cut part, I recommend planting it in a pot with a sandy substrate (perlite, vermiculite or similar). That way it won't rot.
          A greeting.

I have it in the kitchen and my house is large, that is, the kitchen with the dining room. What can I do? Although I would not like it because I liked the way it was. Hello Maria Cecilia.
Yes, you can cut the leaves that are brown, but if they have a part of green, cut healthy; In other words, leave the green part to them as it will help the plant to have strength and to be able to draw new ones.
For the rest, take care of her as you did before your vacation, and it will surely not take long for her to get pretty again.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Lalo.
You can prune it in late winter by making an oblique cut 20cm from the top. Thus, you will force him to take lower leaves, and when that happens, it will be when you can lower his height more.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Analia.
If temperatures start to drop, protect it from drafts, and water it less, once every 10 to 15 days.
It is important that the substrate dries completely before watering again to prevent root rot. If you have doubts, insert a thin wooden stick (like the ones the Japanese use to eat): if it comes out clean when you extract it, it is because the earth is dry.
      Greetings 🙂.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Odeth.
How often do you water it? Often times the trunk starts to get soft is due to overwatering. It is advisable to water from time to time, between 1 and 2 times a week.
If it becomes softer and softer, then it is better to proceed to cut clean so that it does not spread to the rest of the plant.

Hello. I have no idea where the "YELLOW LEAVES IS BECAUSE OF LACK OF WATERING" came from, although relatively true (because to get to that point first you will see the very very soft leaves and the ribs marked in the best extreme dehydration style). Muuuuuuuuuuuuchiiiiiiiiiiiisimo more common than it is due to excessive irrigation (it is not true at all about the shiny leaf, it sounds like criticism of the article but I say it with the best good vibes, I hope they interpret it). And the most important thing that nobody mentions is the pH of the water ... like all tropical plants it loves that it is slightly acidic. Excess water and also alkaline results in yellow leaves and dry brown tips.

Those with problems should try to distance the irrigation and acidify the water with vinegar (for example, 1 large cup or 5cc of vinegar with 5% acetic acid would leave 1 liter of water with pH 7,4 with a final pH of 6,2 ... it may vary according to the drinking water of each area) or some other acid such as citric or phosphoric.

Greetings and I hope I have cleared some doubts about your dracaena (or dracena) massangeana. And as a reference I recommend the same care for any other dracena.

REFERENCES: Personal experience of caring for hundreds of these plants in my nursery + studies in bioengineering 🙂 😉

I'll tell you: where I live (Mallorca, Spain), tap water has a high pH, so much so that it cannot be drunk. The people that I have seen who have a Palo de Agua, have always watered them with that water, and they are plants that are well, healthy. Here they tend to die more from overwatering than from the irrigation water itself.

The weather in my town changed a lot and the fall started with extremely cold temperatures. It was always beautiful and last winter I can bear it very well but this winter it is drying up more and more, its leaves are drying from the tip inwards and the most babies are turning yellow. One morning he woke up and two of his biggest leaves fell silent. I don't know what to do, help! Is it cold?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Micaela.
Yes, it is probably because of the cold.
My advice is that you put it in an area where there are no drafts, neither cold nor warm. It is also highly recommended to water little, because in cold months the plant does not grow that much, so a weekly watering can be more than enough.
By the way, do not fertilize it until spring returns, as it could be harmful.

    Hola!
Reading the entire article and the comments and responses, I have realized that I have done everything wrong with my Palo de Agua….?
But now I have hope too! ?
    I want to ask:
I realized that one of the things that I must do, to improve the life of my little plant, is to change its soil and pot (maybe also add some vitamin ... I don't know ...). The problem is that here in Chile (city of Concepción) where I live, we are in autumn until the middle of next September.
So I don't know whether to keep it as is and wait until spring for this change? Or should I definitely do it now?
What should I add to the ground…. vitamins? Or a good land is enough?
Ah, well, my Palo de Agua is with 80% of its dead leaves, not growing for a long time (like stagnant), and its stick is very good (I mean it is not soft).
    Thanks in advance…..?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello, Elizabeth.
It is better to change pot and soil in spring. If you are now in winter, the transplant can harm you.
You do not have to fertilize it or add vitamins, because at this time you do not need them and, in fact, they could burn its roots.
Choose a substrate that contains perlite, and if you can, put a first layer - inside the pot - of volcanic clay or pebbles. This way the roots can grow better.
If you have a plate underneath, remove the excess water 30 minutes after you've watered.
      Good luck 🙂

Hello… I live in Chile, in the interior of the fourth region, two months ago I bought two sticks of water and I put only water on their leaves (with a sprinkler). This is once a week and once a month I put demineralized water in the dish ... (so that the plant takes water through the root).
We are in winter now (August). The temperature where I have them, inside my office, is 15 degrees app a day and 10 to 12 app. at night. I don't like heaters so I can't have it at a higher temperature.
I have never put water on the ground… ..

I would like to know if :
    The care is ok?,
Do I need a subscription?, And how often?

    Thank you very much.

      Hi Lilian.
I recommend you water by moistening the substrate, once a week now that you are in winter, and every 4-5 days the rest of the year. If they have a plate underneath, remove the excess water after 30 minutes of watering.
It is not advisable to spray, as the water could clog the pores of the leaves and, as a consequence, they could dry out.
You can pay them in spring and summer, with a universal fertilizer for plants once a month.
      A greeting.

Dear Monica .... I bought a pressed substrate, which expands with water, however the person who guided me on the subject told me to also buy water retaining soil, so as not to have to water the water stick so much ... The land It has the following characteristics .. «Natural substrate, specially formulated, to increase water and nutrient retention. Contains super water absorbent polymers that allow 40% water savings in irrigation.
Its high content of organic matter allows it to be used in all types of plants. Ideal to be used in flowerpots and planters, ensuring the availability of water for the plants to meet their needs.
It improves the structure of the soil, reducing compaction and favoring the aeration of the roots.
        FORM OF USE
Apply directly to transplants and to fill pots or planters.
It is very important after these tasks to water abundantly to hydrate the super absorbent polymers. ».

The question I have is… .If I put the water retaining earth, can I also put the pressed substrate ???.

        A hug

          Hi Lilian.
I do not recommend it for the Palo de Agua, as it would end up rotting from excess moisture.

Hello!!! I have a stick of water in kokedama, and it was super good, for almost 2 years I bought it…. I went on vacation for 40 days and when I came back I found it very ruined !!!! My friend, who came to see me at the house, says that she watered it, but reading the comments, it seems to me that it may have been, because even though it was inside the house, it was very cold or maybe she says that she watered it with water That it picked up from a leak that leaked from the ceiling… ..do you think I will be able to recover it even if I leave it in the kokedama? Or will I have to take it out?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Alicia.
Palo de agua does best on land. I would recommend you transfer it to a pot with a substrate that has good drainage, such as black peat and perlite mixed in equal parts, and water it little, about twice a week.
      A greeting.

  32.   SOL said

Hello. I am Sol, writing from Buenos Aires for my dear Palo de Agua that has the tips of the leaves that are drying. From what I read in the comments, the watering, light and temperature are adequate. Cutting the ends I don't think is good because it could make it start to dry again and it would dry the entire leaf little by little ... I think the pot is fine, although I will try to change it for another.

Should the transplant date be specific?
What should I put in the pot?
Should the sheets be cleaned with a cloth with water, perhaps to make them moistened? Although I read that it can clog pores ..
    What else can I do?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Sun.
The ideal transplant time is in spring, when temperatures begin to rise.
As a substrate you can use universal growing substrate mixed with perlite or 50% clay balls. In the bottom, if you can get it, put a layer of volcanic clay or washed river sand.
You can clean the leaves with a cloth moistened (without dripping) in water or milk, but I do not advise spraying them because otherwise the pores would clog and wilt.
      A greeting.

Thank you very much for responding !! We'll see what happens next month with the transplant. Greetings!! (For the excitement of posting I forgot to say hello in the previous message, so this one goes with Hugs !!) Thank you very much again 🙂

      Hi July.
Try scratching the trunk a little to see if it is green; If it is not, unfortunately nothing can be done anymore 🙁.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Viviana.
I do not advise it, since the Palo de Agua does not want to have "wet feet", and in fact its trunk can rot easily.

Hello Monica, can you help me? I have a stick of water on my desk but there are yellow eyes, I always put water on it, the change of place, I think it is the flowerpot, someone told me that I have to cut the roots but I don't know how do it. What should I do.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Blanca.
The yellow leaves are usually due to overwatering, or because the substrate does not have good drainage.
My advice is that, if you can, change the soil for a mixture of universal cultivation substrate with perlite (or clay balls, or river sand) in equal parts, and that you water by letting it dry, since even if it is called »Palo of water ”, in reality it is a plant that does not support waterlogging.
Also, if you have a plate underneath, remove it 15 minutes after watering.
      A greeting.

Hello, I am from Buenos Aires, my water stick dried all the leaves and only the trunk fell, is it possible to recover it?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Julieta.
Scratch the trunk a little to see if it is green; otherwise, unfortunately nothing can be done 🙁.
But if it is, water it twice a week with homemade rooting hormones (here we tell you how to do them).
      A greeting.

Hello. I have had a water stick for 11 years. It had a stick about a meter and a half long that was bent until it was cut. In addition, two little plants came out from below (10 leaves each) always from the main pole. My question is what do I do with the upper part of the trunk that was cut? (It has about 8 leaves) I put it in a glass vase with water for a month but it still has no roots. The rest of the "peeled" trunk is cut into pieces of about 15 cm. Should I bury them complete in the soil in the same pot where the original is? Or should I discard them? Can you take advantage of them in any way? Thank you. Carlos from Buenos Aires

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi carlos.
My advice is to plant the cuttings (chunks) in pots with porous substrates (akadama, pómice, perlita), since although it is known as "Palo de agua", in reality it is a plant that does not support waterlogging.
Bury them a bit, about 5cm. To make it easier for them to root, you can impregnate their base with powdered rooting hormones that you will find in nurseries.
      A greeting.

Hello, I have 3 sticks of water, they suggested I put them in gel balls but the trunks at the top and one carrying the lower part began to rot

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Alfredo.
The water sticks, although their name indicates otherwise, grow much better on land. To try to recover them, I recommend you cut your losses, impregnate the base with rooting hormones and plant them in pots with a porous substrate (pomx, perlite, akadama or vermiculite).
      Good luck.

Hello I read all the comments and answers but I did not see anywhere the approximate amount of water with which it should be watered ... I have some pots of approx 36 and others of 40 cm in diameter above and all conical ... substrate for indoor plants mixed with vermiculite and broken stone below and others with clay balls ... in all the drainage is good and I water it every 4 or 5 days ... I put a small amount of liquid hormone in the water to root cuttings and for root growth and I started in spring to put growth hormone every 15 days or twice with rooting and one with hormone ... Am I doing well? About the amount of water I asked more than anything because sometimes I get too excited about it and it ends up gathering too much on the plate… Greetings and thank you very much.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Sergio.
You have to pour water into it until it comes out of the drainage holes, about 3 glasses of water. After 15 minutes, you have to remove the plate and remove the excess water.
Regarding your question, it cannot be better cared 🙂, although the rooting agents are not very necessary, but they will not harm you at all.
      A greeting.

About 6 months ago we bought a stick of water, about 15 days ago we changed the pot because it was too small, and it started well. Then we moved it to place the Christmas tree, and now some white spots appeared, and on the new leaves they appeared with brown spots on the sides. We water it once a week. Will it hurt to be in the air stream? Before I was more sheltered between an armchair and the refrigerator.

Hello Mónica Sánchez, a few days ago my Brazilian stick was very good until the leaves began to turn a bit yellow and loose, so I decided to water it and just today that I checked it, I noticed that the bark could be easily removed and that same bark It looks dark inside What I can do? Is my stick from Brazil saved?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Alejandra.
It is likely that it has suffered an excess of irrigation 🙁
You can treat it with a systemic fungicide (you will find it in nurseries and garden stores), but recovering it is difficult when it has started to necrotize (turn black).
Even so, if the stem has some normal parts, that is, that when touched it feels hard and not soft, it could be saved.
      Much encouragement.

I hope you can help me. Thank you, I'm looking forward for your answer … ?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Paz.
From what you count, it seems that your plant has excess moisture. My advice is that you water it two or three times a week at most, and do not spray it unless the environment in your home is very dry.
If you have a plate underneath, remove the excess water 15 minutes after watering.
To avoid problems, it is convenient to treat it with a fungicide - sold in nurseries - following the instructions specified on the packaging.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Sergio.
If you give the air conditioner on that side, yes, it is the cause of the leaves getting ugly.
If you can, put it somewhere where it won't hit, and it'll pop out new leaves right away.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Areli.
The Palo de Agua cannot get direct sunlight at any time, since otherwise its leaves would burn. So if you give it even just a couple of hours, chances are you're having a hard time and need a change of location.

When I bought it, it had some brown tips, but as time went by, all the tips of the bush began to get that way. I put water on it once a week and it keeps changing color. I don't know what to do to see it better, what do you advise me? Thanks

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello, Luz.
From what you count, it is most likely that you are suffering the consequences of excess humidity. The Palo de Agua is a plant that does not grow well in water. It is best to have it in a pot with a universal growing medium mixed with perlite so that it can grow well.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Speranza.
From what you count, it looks like your plant is overwatering.

In any case, if you have recently had it, it is normal for the tips to burn due to the change of location. The important thing is that it is kept in a bright room but without direct sun, and that it is watered from time to time.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Daniela.
Where you are now, is the sun shining through the window? Is it watered more or less than before?
I ask this because if it has yellow leaves it may be due to overwatering, being in an area where sunlight reaches it directly, or both.

It is highly recommended to check the humidity of the soil before watering, for example by inserting a thin wooden stick all the way to the bottom: if it comes out clean it can be watered, but if it comes out with a lot of soil attached it will be better than not since it will be very humid.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Aurora.
Yes, you can remove unsightly leaves.
Have you ever changed the pot? If not, the combination of lack of space (and nutrients) + cold is likely to have been the cause.
Even if you are in winter, and given the state in which it is, my recommendation is that you move it to a pot about 2-3cm wider, with soil.
Water it once a week until the weather improves, then increase the frequency to 2 or maximum 3 weekly waterings. In spring you can also start to fertilize it with a universal fertilizer for plants, following the instructions specified on the package.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Rosalba.
Yes, I recommend you take it outside, in an area where it does not get direct sunlight. You will do better 🙂

Hello, good afternoon, a question. I can have the stick of happiness in a glass vase with water and pebbles or it must be sown in the pot with soil. Thanks

      Hello paola.
It is better if it is planted in a pot with soil. It does not like to have waterlogged roots.

Hello, I have a Brazilian wood of approximately 2 years, lately it has grown a lot I have decided to change it from a pot to a larger one but its leaves are expanding to the extent that it no longer fits in the space of the house, is there any way to control or fix its leaves so it doesn't get hurt and can grow without expanding as much?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi sweetie.
In your case, you can prune it to remove lower branches. The time for this is in spring.
Another option is, if you can, take it outside, to a patio protected from the cold.
      A greeting.

I am very distressed, my 17-year-old water stick is wrong, about 20 leaves have dried (brown, soft) in the last month, and there are just under 6 left only at the tip, it is 15 cm from the ceiling , it must be because of that? It makes me sad, we have a whole story with Domingo Acuoso .. I changed it closer to a window but nothing ..
    Help please!

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Carol.
Have you changed the pot? If you have not done it, I recommend doing it because probably the symptoms they show are due to lack of space.
And if you have done it recently, it is probably because you are already so close to the ceiling. If you can, take it outside, in a patio with lots of light but protected from the cold.
      A greeting.

Good afternoon, I have a Brazilian stick that I have already been with for 3 years and it is 4 months old. I changed it to a bigger pot because at that time it did not grow. Now it is already growing but not the trunk, only the arm of the leaves and the leaves, the arm looks larger than the trunk and the leaves are green green does not have stripes like the others. Because it will be this. It is normal? And what do you recommend so that the trunk grows too?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Manuel.
Yes it's normal. When plants have all the space they need, they tend to spend more energy producing leaves, which are their food factories, and not so much on the trunk.
I recommend you fertilize it with liquid fertilizers for plants, either guano or a chemical (universal).
      A greeting.

I removed the entire burned leaves because I was sad to see it like this and because I thought it was taking away the plant's strength. Then I moved it to a place with clarity but without direct sunlight. As the days went by I realized that a cat urinated in the pot and the plant began to wither, I made a change of soil and started to tear off a good part of one of its hooks where it was healthy and with several new leaves on the way Now I do not know what to do, I am very worried and I hope that it will go back to being the leafy one. Will leaves come out again from the part that happens to cut ??? Or do I have to forget about that and place some healing? Can I plant the part that happens to be cut waiting for it to function as a sprout? ?? From already thank you very much

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Pamela.
Cat urine is very strong for plants. If the Water Stick was already weak, it probably had a hard time recovering.
It is not possible to know if it will take leaves again, but you can go watering it with rooting hormones that you will find for sale in nurseries.
The part that you cut yes, you can plant it in a pot with rooting hormones and wait.
      A greeting.

Dracaena flowers are hermaphroditic, that is, they have female and male organs in the same flower.

    Hi gorgeous,
I have a 2-year-old stick and I notice that its leaves are drooping and with folds, will it need more space or does it lack more water?

    I'm sad!

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello, Elizabeth.
If the leaves are down, you may be overwatering. Do you have it in water or in a pot with soil? If you have it in water, I recommend you transfer it to a pot because this plant does not tolerate waterlogging; it can rot right away.
If you have it in a pot, water it less: once or a maximum of twice a week in summer and every 10-15 days the rest of the year.
      A greeting.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Constance.
You can prune it in late winter or spring. Plant the piece in a pot with soil, although you can also place it in a glass of water until it takes roots. Change the water daily to prevent algae from forming.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

    All the best

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Natalia.
How often do you water it? Is it near any air stream? Is it potted with soil or in water?
I tell you: you have to water it little, no more than twice a week. Also, it is important not to give it drafts, since its leaves could get ugly.
In the event that it is in water, I recommend planting it in a pot with soil, since it does not live well in water (it rots).

Hello, about 8 months ago, they gave me a stick of water. It was the first time I knew the plant. The only advice they gave me was to keep it inside, I watered it, between 2 and 3 times a week, but it turned brown at the ends. When I saw her decay, I took her out to the patio and put her in a place where the sun did not shine on her and even so, she continued to get ugly. Now I returned her to the living room, but she cannot recover and I notice that her leaves are as if passed out, fallen. What do you reconedé me ?! Thank you very much in advance! Greetings!!

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Vanesa.
I recommend keeping it in a very bright room (without direct sun).
Water it little: no more than twice a week in summer and every 7-10 days the rest of the year. If you have a plate underneath it, remove any excess water within ten minutes of watering.

It is with other plants such as a potus that grows very well and others but the water stick does not grow…. I don't know what to do to make it grow.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Andrea.
If you share a pot with a poto, then that is the reason 🙂
Potos, being a fast growing plant, is taking away nutrients.

In the event that you are alone, you will probably be short of compost. You can fertilize it in spring and summer with universal fertilizer for plants.

      All the best

Hello ... I have 2 plants (water sticks) and since I bought them for almost three years they have been growing well and have produced many little leaves ... until September of last year I had it in the office and by force majeure I brought them to my house … .The area here is very freezing because it is close to the mountain range… this winter has been very freezing (inside the fourth region of Chile) a week ago both plants were fine… today I noticed that one of them has brown tips and also the trunk is as wet and the other only the trunk as wet .... I think that since the sun did not come out and the corridor where it had them has not been sheltered, it may be going damp ... so I decided to change it to the corridor where we have a fireplace and the temperature is warmer….
As a NOTE I inform that I water them with very little water and every 2 weeks for the same humidity that we have at this time.
I want to know if there is anything else I can do to help him recover?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello, Elizabeth.
Yes, you can cut it up and keep it in water until it takes root.
But if you have never changed from pot to plant, I would recommend doing it since it has probably run out of space and nutrients.

      Hi Karin.
Yes, you can cut them without problem. So that it does not appear again, I ask you, does it give it any draft? If so, I would recommend protecting it from them.

You can pay it in spring and summer with any fertilizer for plants, be it universal, guano or others 🙂 Of course, important: follow the instructions specified on the package.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi John.

Once the stem is cut, what will happen is that a few more stems will sprout from its sides. The vertical growth of that cut stem stops.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi leandro.

It depends on the weather and where you have them. One watering every 15 days if they are indoors, and it is winter, it is not usually a problem. But if you are away from home, and / or it is spring or summer, then you do have to water more, about 2 times a week.

Hello… I have had my Brazilian wood for a month and a half, it was beautiful and very green… For a week I have seen it dull sad and its leaves have brown spots .. apparently it is due to excessive watering but I have another question .. I have it located in a corner of my apartment between the bathroom and the door of my room .. I don't know if it is very dark there is .. since that place is not very bright .. I would like to know if there is good or should I change it .. thank you!

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Claudia.

This is a plant that needs a lot of (natural) light to be able to grow, therefore, if the area where it is located does not reach much, it would be highly recommended to move it.

Regarding the brown leaves, yes, it is probably due to excess water. In the event that you have a plate placed under it, you have to remove the excess water after each irrigation, since in this way there is a lower risk of the roots rotting.

      Greetings.

how do you water a stick of water

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Irma.

It will depend on whether you have it indoors or outdoors, in a pot or planted in the garden.

In general, it has to be watered about 2 times a week, soaking the soil well. In winter you have to water less, since the soil remains wet longer.

If you have doubts, contact us. Greetings!

Some time ago, some cats tried and defecated on the water stick, my mother changed the soil but still the water stick withered, its leaves are brown and fallen, even the small ones that were just growing are just as brown, I do not know if I did the right thing but I removed the stick of water from the ground and put it in a bowl with water so that the root can absorb water and eliminate the infection from cat waste, do you think it can be recovered that way?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Catalina.

I don `t believe. Despite its name, it is not a water plant, but a land plant. If the roots are left in the water and then the trunk rots.

I recommend you put it in a pot with holes, and new soil.

See if it improves. If only.

      Hi Sylvia.

Yes, when the weather is warm all year round, this plant appreciates it very much, becoming very pretty 🙂

From Argentina: I have a plant that is all the same as a stick of water. Only it grew from the tip of the water stick up. And the most wonderful thing in this spring 2020, very changed, began to bloom. I suppose it is a very adult Water Stick. I can send you the photo Thank you. ¡¡

I have my water stick for 12 years in a large pot in my bathroom. He's big and has flowered once or twice a year. A strong but delicious smell. I water it once every 15 days and I always comb it by removing the brown leaves below.

Congratulations Melanie. Without a doubt, you are taking great care of it so that it has flourished 🙂

I have a stick of water and two days ago it fell as if it had broken, but the leaves are still green, what happened or can I save it? I hope your comment thanks !?

      Hello Maria.

Does the sun shine on the stem? How often do you water it?

It is possible that it is watering too much. Here we talk about it.

If you have doubts, write to us. Greetings

      Hi Patricia.
      Thanks for your comment.

Well, I wouldn't be able to tell you why it bloomed earlier this year, but ideal temperatures may have been recorded for it to bloom.

      A greeting.

Hello, thank you very much for the information. I have a plant and this huge one is 10 feet tall and has flowered twice, but I don't know when it will stop growing and it has already reached the ceiling...

      Hello Susy.
It is a plant that can exceed 2 meters without problems. But if it reaches the ceiling, it will tend to bend.
      A greeting.
