Caring for Carnivorous Plants

Before thinking about the care we should have with carnivorous plants, we must know how these types of plants are divided. Carnivorous plants are divided into those with a tropical climate, which are more difficult to grow because they need higher humidity and a warm temperature (Nephentes, Caphalotus, etc.), and those with non-tropical climates, which live outdoors in areas where winters they are not too cold like Dionaea, Sarracenia, La Drosera etc.

You must remember that the moment you acquire a carnivorous plant and put it inside your home, the plant will go into shock and it will take time to acclimate to this new location. It is advisable to put it in the first instance, in a terrarium or in a very humid place with warm temperatures.

Since carnivorous plants need a lot of light, you can take it out from time to time to get sunlight, however not all carnivorous plants can stay in the sun for a long time.

The carnivorous plant species that should have at least 5 hours of direct sunlight are: Dionaea, Sarracenia, Heliamphora, Pinguicula, Cephalotus and Darlingtonia. Keep in mind that the morning sun should be used, between 8 in the morning and 12 noon.

The plants that should not receive the direct rays of the sun are the Nepenthes and Drosera, since they can get burned and their traps atrophy.

As we mentioned earlier, temperature and humidity are essential factors when having a carnivorous plantHowever, it is very important to take into account whether the species are of tropical origin or not.

In the case of the Dionea and Sarracenia, they need to hibernate for a couple of months with temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius. While the Drosera, Nepenthes, Cephalotus, Heliamphora and some Pinguiculas that are tropical plants that cannot withstand low temperatures, they should never be below 5 degrees of temperature.

I have three carnivorous plants I managed to survive for three years which I thought I could not raise them, what I notice is that they no longer catch the insects on their own and for fear that they will die I give them flies that I hunt them, which is the why they no longer hunt? I have them very close to the window and the sun gives them too much
