Carnivorous plants, a demanding species

Carnivorous plant

All the carnivorous plants they are so called because they eat insects, such as frogs, minnows, worms, baby rodents, small scorpions and, very rarely, birds and reptiles. If until not too long ago they were known as "insectivorous plants" today they are called "carnivorous plants" since other animals in addition to insects can enter their diet.

Most live in swampy grounds, in bogs with acidic soil and in general in soils poor in nitrogen for the roots, which is why they have developed methods to trap animals and thus meet their nutritional needs.

Many of these species are demanding and require rigorous care while others are not so and adapt to life in the rooms of a house. The carnivorous plants They are short-lived plants that need high humidity and not limestone water to be watered.

There are two types of carnivorous plants: the tropical ones, which are more difficult to grow because they need high humidity and warm temperatures, so it is best to grow them in terrariums. On the other hand, there are non-tropical carnivorous plants, which are those that live outdoors, in areas where winters are a bit cold. They are species that go through a period of lethargy in winter and thrive in aquatic or marshy gardens.

To acclimatize them to a house, the carnivorous plants need plenty of light. We recommend that you place them in a terrarium with high humidity and heat for about a month. You can also use a wooden frame, covered with clear plastic or something similar. Later on it will no longer be necessary to keep them in a terrarium.

Once located in the place where they will remain forever, the temperature requirements are not so rigorous and vary from one species to another, depending on whether it is of tropical origin or not.
