7 tricks to keep plants green

Today we are going to talk about a well-known apple variety of Canadian origin. It is about the pippin apple. The apple has emerged from different pylons of other species. Its provenance is really unknown but it is a fairly old parity that has been historically documented since the beginning of the XNUMXth century. Its consumption has been limited to Europe, mainly in Italy, Spain, Germany and France, with France and Italy being the main producers of these countries. In this article we are going to tell you what are the characteristics of the pippin apple and how it should be grown. Main characteristics This fruit has a brownish green color and the entire surface of the fruit has russeting. Russeting is nothing more than a special type of skin that is slightly rough and with a color that generally varies between greenish brown and yellowish brown or reddish gray. It has a texture that suggests how the apple had a thin cork film. The shape of the apple is very irregular and its flesh has a thick but not very juicy white texture. When you bite it, it is usually a firm but mealy texture. They are apples with a medium size, flattened and asymmetrical shape. Despite having a floury texture, they are quite juicy and very aromatic. What is most striking about this variety of apples is the taste that has a mixture of sweet and sour taste. And it is that at the time of harvest they have a somewhat more acidic taste and, as the days go by after their harvest, they become sweeter. This type of variety has the characteristic of being climacteric. That is, the ripening process continues after harvesting. Hence, the taste changes from more acid to sweeter as the days go by after harvesting. To keep them in good condition, businesses usually use it to place them in atmospheres controlled with oxygen and carbon dioxide. In this way, the modulation will stop and it will be able to maintain the firmness and acidity that they have when harvested and possible rottenness is avoided. There are those who preserve them in natural conditions so that they continue to mature and improve their conditions. Being natural you can see how the skin wrinkles, they lose water and some acidity but they become sweeter and more aromatic for other purposes. Pippin apples open less when they mature on the tree and are better preserved for longer than the gray variety of Pippin. Picking the pippin apple When the apples are picked from the tree they must be dry. You have to remove them for immediate consumption or all those that do not have intact skin and are healthy. You have to be careful about hitting them and they are placed in wooden trays with a thick paper at the bottom. Once stored in the warehouse, it is tried that they do not have any direct sunlight, with little humidity and a constantly cool temperature. This is how it manages to maintain the characteristics without any problem until the time of sale and distribution. From time to time those that are rotten that are usually affected by some fungi, blue spot, black spot and Penicillium are checked and removed. They are ideal apples to eat fresh when they are just connected. For some children, they may seem too tart and may not be very suitable for baking at this time. However, when they mature a little more and they become sweeter if they have a good place in pastries. Acidity is measured in grams of malic acid. This acid is lost as apples ripen under natural conditions. In the conservation conditions mentioned above, they are kept as if they had been collected from the tree for as long as possible. A trick we have to choose a white pippin apple is to choose a yellow one that has a little wrinkled skin that indicates the one that has lost water. This apple will be ripe enough to enhance the flavor and aroma and the sweetness will be more concentrated. Some of the areas should have a little red plating. Pippin apple cultivation To start a plantation of apple trees of this variety, the first thing you have to do is look for a farm with a north-south orientation preferably. The only thing that is demanding in terms of location is that it is at a height between 450 and 600 meters above sea level. The land must be alluvial, that is, with river carry materials that are bones and have good drainage so that the tree does not suffer when the irrigation water accumulates. This is already telling us that the frequency of irrigation and the quantity must be regulated so as not to result in a storage of the water. The soil pH must be between 5,5 and 7. The pippin apple has vigorous vegetation so we have to avoid planting it in trough areas where the soils are usually very fertile and in very clay soils as they will give the tree even more vigor. The more vigor a tree has, the less production it will have. You have to choose the training system for planting the apple. The planting frame is usually 4,50 meters between row and row and 2,70 meters between trees. The maintenance of the ground must be covered with grass in the center of the street to avoid excessive soil erosion. It is advisable to use a contact herbicide that is never residual in the rows. With these plants in the rows, we ensure that the microorganisms and animals in the soil have an ideal environment to live. In addition, we achieve that the erosion by the water will be zero. As for irrigation, the most recommended is the one that is drip with fertigation. Fertilizers are added to the water, which makes the underground contamination practically nil.

Today we are going to talk about a well-known parasitic fungus that can affect a wide variety of cereals and other herbs. This is ergot. Its scientific name is Claviceps purpurea and it is a parasitic fungus whose most common host is rye. Infestations with this fungus often reduce the quality and quantity of grain and hay. Also, if crops are used to feed livestock and are infested, it can cause a disease called ergotism. In this article we are going to talk to you about the characteristics, life cycle of impacts that ergot has on crops. Main characteristics Ergot is deposited on the ground and can remain dormant until conditions are conducive to growth. When it started to grow it is known as the fruitful phase. It can be identified because, during this phase, it develops a small mushroom that releases fungal spores. These spores are barely a micron thick. The eradication of this fungus has to be rapid since it can seriously affect crops, especially if it is intended to serve as food for livestock. This disease was first described in the 1800s. During the Middle Ages there were poisonings due to the consumption of grain infested with this fungus. It was very common the affection to the human being in Europe to eat infested grain. To be able to identify it, the ergot of rye can be seen with the naked eye as an outgrowth that is attached to the cereal grains. It is usually purple to black in color and is only 1 to 4 centimeters long and about 5 millimeters wide. Among the main components of ergot of rye we have the alkaloid called ergotamine (hence the disease caused by the ingestion of infested meat from cattle is known as ergotism). Other important components are other alkaloids such as ergometrine, ergocristrine and ergocriptine. Negative effects of ergot This fungus that had a great incidence in poor people who ate contaminated grains. In ancient times this contaminated grain was responsible for ergotism. This disease can affect both humans, animals that eat the plant infected with the fungus. To recognize this disease, it is known that the main symptom is the loss of limbs in the feet and in the hands, ears, nose, etc. This limb loss occurs because blood circulation worsens to enormous levels in such a way that the blood cannot reach all the extremities of the body. Those responsible for this poor circulation are the alkaloids that we have mentioned above. These to the corpses cause a narrowing of the blood vessels to such an extent that it hinders blood circulation in a normal way. When the blood supply is lacking in any part of our body, what is known as gangrene originates. Members with gangrene must be amputated so that the infection does not spread to the rest of the body. Another of the symptoms by which they recognized ergotism is due to the hallucinations produced by its components. In the Middle Ages it was believed that they were simple hallucinations without any problem, but later, this symptom was studied in depth and it was known that patients who were infected went crazy. Ergot Poisoning Ergot poisoning is well known. The effects of alkaloids have vasoconstrictive properties that are those that produce gangrene in the extremities. To this effect we must add the toxicity that this fungus has on the central nervous system. In the way they affect the nervous system, it can be seen manifesting in seizures, hallucinations and depressive states. If a pregnant woman becomes infected by eating grain contaminated by this fungus, it can cause an abortion or premature delivery. The abortifacient effect of ergot was already known in the Middle Ages and was purposely used by healers and midwives for this practice. The fatal dose is close to 1 gram. Today this type of intoxication is almost impossible to see. In case of poisoning, emergency treatment is administered activated charcoal and heparin associated with a vasodilator is administered. This vasodilator is the one that does the opposite effect of the ergot that increases the pressure in the blood vessels. The most immediate effects of the alkaloids derived from ergotamine are vomiting to eliminate the poison effectively. You can try to induce vomiting to eliminate the poison as soon as possible. If the affected person suffers from seizures, it is recommended to use diazepam. It should also be noted that symptoms of toxicity can be found even with recommended doses of ergotamine and other rye alkaloids. This is because they can be co-administered with an antibiotic from the macrolide family. This administration is totally contraindicated. Medicinal properties Although this fungus has a high degree of toxicity, it is used in the pharmaceutical industry for the production of different drugs. For example, it has been used to produce medicines to treat migraines, stop bleeding after childbirth, or for Parkinson's disease. The traditional use of this mushroom is quite old. As we have mentioned before, it was also used inappropriately as an abortifacient and to stop women from giving birth. It has also been used in the wrong common hallucinogenic way. This practice has led many people to serious health problems. Among the main symptoms that we find when ingesting ergot are the following: • Headache • Diarrhea • Vomiting • Tremors • Difficulty breathing • Contractions • Hypotension • Cardiorespiratory arrest Therefore, we must be aware and know if we have ingested ergot, since a dose of one gram can be fatal.
