The genus appeared on Earth many millions of years ago. In fact, fossil records of an extinct species, C. eureka, belonging to the Eocene, have been found. 55 million years ago. So if you want to have a plant that can be considered a living fossil, this is one of your best options.

Its leaves are of two types: the youngest are needle-shaped, but as they mature they become scaly. These are light or dark green depending on the species. The fruits are globose or oval cones inside which are 2 to 4 seeds, which you have to stratify in the fridge for 3 months and sow in pots with substrate composed of black peat and perlite in equal parts. Here We explain how they are stratified.

It is very rustic, withstanding frosts of up to -15ºC.

If we talk about their care, we are facing a conifer to which we have to protect from direct sun. It also needs high humidity, and a soil that has very good drainage. Thus, it is recommended to mix the garden soil with peat and sand in equal parts, in spring, although it can be in autumn if we live in a mild climate.

Irrigation has to be occasional, once a week or two at most in summer. We can take advantage of it to fertilize it with an organic fertilizer such as guano during the growing season (spring and summer).
