El populus, known as aspen, aspen, or nightlight, is a tree native to cool and temperate regions of Europe and Asia. It can be found as far north as in the Arctic circle in Scandinavia and in the southern part of the Old Continent in high mountainous areas. In the specific case of Spain, it grows only at altitudes ranging from 900 to 1900 meters, and in an isolated way in Sierra de María (Almería) and Sierra de Gor (Granada).
In Latin American cities such as Quito, Bogotá or Santiago de Chile it is grown in abundance.
Features
- Height: it is a tree that reaches 30 meters.
- Trunk: up to 1 meter in diameter, with pale gray-greenish and smooth bark when young, and with lenticels - they are protrusions through which it can breathe - dark grayish diamond-shaped and fissured when it ages.
- Leaves: they are almost round in the adult specimen, a little wider than long and measure 2-8cm in diameter. The margin is toothed and the petiole is flattened, 4-8cm long.
On the contrary, in the young specimen they are heart-shaped or almost triangular, and are up to 20cm long.
They are deciduous, falling in autumn after turning yellow. - Flowers: There are male flowers and female flowers on different trees. They ripen in early summer.
- Fruits: they are ovate and granular capsules that open, leaving the seeds free.
- Seeds: they have a cottony appearance, and they are small, 1cm.
