Choosing Fruit Tree Species According to the Climate II

As we had said before, if you are one of those who like to eat fruit and would like to plant fruit trees in your garden, you should know that some fruit species are more suitable for each climate.

The first thing to consider before planting a fruit tree in your garden is the weather.

We have already seen the problems that fruit trees have in cold climates: fruit tree species that do not resist strong frosts (mango, avocado, citrus fruits, etc.) die, and low temperatures destroy the flowering that prevents fruit production. .

But just as cold climates have their limitations, so do hot climates.

Many fruit species, for example, need to accumulate cold during the winter to flower properly, but if where you live is not cold enough in the winter, these trees would have sprouting problems, appear without leaves, etc. For example, a cherry tree would not produce fruit if it is planted in the Amazon, since it cannot accumulate the cold it needs to produce its fruit.

Next we will present the fruit species classified according to the climate necessary to produce fruits.

  • Cold climate: with frequent frosts and minimum temperatures of down to -10 degrees Celsius. Fruit trees to plant in this type of climate are: blueberry, cherry, plum, raspberry, apple tree, peach, nectarine, blackberry, pear, and blackberry.
  • Temperate and Mediterranean climate: with scarce frosts that do not reach 10 degrees below zero. In this climate can be planted: apricot, almond, kiwi, passion fruit, olive, passion fruit, and pistachio.
  • Coastal Mediterranean climate: If frosts occur, they do not reach 5 degrees below zero. The fruit trees that will produce fruits at this temperature will be: tomato tree, citron, feijoa, figs, lime, lemon, tangerine, orange, banana, medlar, grapefruit, grapefruit and tangelo.
  • Tropical climate: the minimum temperature barely reaches 3 degrees Celsius. Avocado, cocoa, coconut, coffee tree, custard apple, carambola, guava, lychee, soursop, papaya, rose apple and tamarind can be planted.
