El citrus maxima It is a tree that is not a lemon tree but not an orange, if not a lemon. It looks very similar to those two fruit trees, so much so that I am sure that if more than one and more than two had it in front of me, I would think that you are seeing a citrus that has not yet finished ripening.

Origin and characteristics

El citrus maxima, known as pamplemusa, lemon, cimboa or Chinese grapefruit, is a fruit tree native to Southeast Asia. Reaches a height of 5 to 15 meters, with a twisted trunk and an irregular and dense crown. New shoots are sometimes thorny. The leaves are simple, alternate, from oblong to oval, leathery, and measure up to 20 centimeters.

The flowers are hermaphroditic, fragrant, solitary or in terminal clusters of up to 10 flowers. The fruit is oblong or globose in shape and measures up to 30cm in diameter. The rind is thick and fluffy, yellow or greenish in color. It is edible, although it has a slightly bitter taste.

What are their cares?

  • Location: outside, in full sun.
  • Earth:
    • Pot: universal growing substrate mixed with 30% perlite.
    • Garden: rich in organic matter, with good drainage.
  • Irrigation: every 2-3 days in summer and somewhat less the rest of the year.
  • Subscriber: in spring and summer it has to be paid with organic fertilizers, such as guano, herbivorous animal manure or compost.
  • Planting or transplanting time: in spring. In case of having it in a pot, it has to be transferred to a larger one every 2 years.
  • Multiplication: by seeds in spring.
  • Rusticity: withstands cold down to -9ºC.
