The 9 best climbers for cold climates

Wisteria flowers

Cold is a serious problem for many gardeners, since sometimes it is really difficult to find those plants that can grow well in these types of climates. Most of those sold in nurseries in temperate regions are species adapted to specific conditions: mild springs, more or less warm summers, cool and humid autumns and winters during which some frost may occur but not too strong.

How to find climbers for cold climates? Well, the truth is that in those same nurseries we can buy some 😉. There are more rustic species than we could ever imagine. The ones I'm going to show you are just some of the most common ... and pretty.

Clematis (clematis)

Clematis in bloom

The Clematis, or clematis, are some of the most cold-hardy and decorative flowering climbers out there. There are about 280 accepted species, evergreen and deciduous, which produce spectacular flowers that can be white, lilac or red. These plants can reach a height of up to 20 meters, so they are perfect for covering pergolas or climbing walls or fences, both in full sun and semi-shade. They resist up to -9ºC.

Hedera (ivy)

Ivy climbing on tree

I know: there is no climber more common than ivy. Surely you have it already very seen, but did you know that there are different type? In addition, since its foliage is perennial, it can be used to cover all year round those areas that you do not like, such as a dry tree trunk, or a wall. This is one of the most cold and heat hardy perennial climbing plants. Put it in semi-shade and you will see how beautiful it gets on you; You can even accustom it to the sun by exposing it little by little and gradually to the king star starting in spring. Resists frosts down to -6ºC.

Hydrangea anomala 'Petiolaris' (climbing hydrangea)

All the hydrangeas They are shrubs that produce some of the most decorative inflorescences that we can see in temperate-cold climates during spring. But the climbing hydrangea does much more than produce pretty flowers: During the fall, its foliage turns light ocher before falling, and apart from that it reaches an impressive development, up to 25 meters. To grow well, it must be placed in shade or semi-shade. Don't worry about the cold: hold up to -10ºC.

Jasminum nudiflorum (winter jasmine)

Jasminum nudiflorum flower

Also known as yellow jasmine or San José jasmine, this is one of the climbing plants with flowers that are resistant to cold and heat with a deciduous leaf that produces bright yellow flowers during spring that, although they do not have a very intense aroma, they are very decorative. It is a perfect plant to cover walls, walls, latticework or fences, regardless of the size of the garden; You can even have it in a pot as long as it is in full sun. It resists well frosts down to -9ºC.

Lonicera (honeysuckle)

Lonicera caprifolium flowers

La honeysuckle It is a shrub with sarmentous branches that reaches a height of up to 6 meters. The leaves are evergreen, and its beautiful, fragrant inflorescences emerge during the spring. Its growth rate is very fast, so much so that its roots, although not invasive, are extremely adaptable, very rustic. For this reason, it is only recommended to have it as a garden plant and not in a pot. Resists cold and frost down to -6ºC.

Parthenocisssus (virgin vine)

Also known as virgin vineyard, a vineyard from Canada, in love with the wall or creeper of Virginia, is one of the climbers that I have dreamed of more than once, and that is that during the autumn its leaves are dyed an intense red color that attracts a lot of attention. This wonderful deciduous climbing plant reaches a height of between 10 and 15 meters, and the most interesting thing is that it can be had in any exposure (sun, semi-shade or shade). What if, resistant to cold: up to -15ºC.

Climbing rose

Rose bushes are already very beloved plants, but can you imagine being under a pergola perceiving the sweet aroma of its flowers? If you thought this was an impossible dream ... you were wrong. Climbing roses exist, and they are also resistant to cold. And, like shrubs, they bloom for much of the year (spring through fall). They withstand temperatures of up to 8ºC without difficulties.

Vitis vinifera (grape vine)

Green grapes on the plant

Or grapevine, it is a sarmentosa plant whose branches climb, fixing itself to the support by means of tendrils. Its leaves are deciduous, very ornamental. It reaches a height of about 3-4 meters, which is why it is recommended to have it in pots or in small gardens. Unlike those we have seen, they produce edible fruits, grapes, during autumn-winter, and supports up to -15ºC.

Wisteria (Wisteria)

Wisteria Tunnel

We finish with one of the climbers for cold climates that are most often loved (than not liked): the Wisteria. Also known as the feather flower, this deciduous plant produces hanging lilac or white inflorescences in spring. It grows to a height of 15 meters, but can be pruned whenever necessary. It must be in full sun or in semi-shade. As a curiosity, to say that it can live more than 100 years, and that resists frost down to -10ºC.

    Good!

I love this website, my problem is that I have a fairly large hanging planter on a roof terrace (although it is semi-shaded), I have had ivy and cape jasmine. The problem has been the summer in Madrid, that the sultry and hot winds have dried the plant no matter how much I have taken care of it. What hanging or climbing plant could I put? In winter, the truth is that all the plants I have planted have withstood it well, but in summer they end up drying up completely.

      Hi Esther.
have you tried with a clematis: fake jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides)? Both are climbers with very pretty flowers, which resist both heat (and sun) and cold well.

We are glad to know that you like the website 🙂

      A greeting.
