Would you like to have a climbing hydrangea? Shrub hydrangeas are gorgeous, but climbers aren't far behind. 🙂 They are not very popular yet, but the truth is that with a little care you can have a wall or a lattice full of white flowers.

Thus, I encourage you to learn more about this curious and striking plant, which is sure to surprise everyone, and not just the family.

How is it?

The climbing hydrangea, whose scientific name is hydrangea petiolaris, is a deciduous plant - loses its leaf in autumn - native to Japan that can reach a height of up to 25 meters. Its foliage is green for much of the year, but before falling it turns light ocher. In spring its flowers appear grouped in very pretty white inflorescences.

Despite its size, it can be grown both in pots and in the garden, since resists pruning very well. In addition, it has suction cups with which it can adhere to the wall without difficulties.

What care do you need?

  • Location: outside, in semi-shade. The direct sun burns the leaves.
  • Earth: acidic (pH between 4 and 6), with good drainage. In the case of wanting to have it in a pot, you can use a substrate for acid plants like this one. here.
  • Irrigation: frequent. Every 2-3 days in summer and every 4-5 days the rest of the year. You have to use rainwater or lime-free. If the one that comes out of the tap is very hard, we can pour the liquid of half a lemon in 1l of water to lower the pH.
  • Subscriber: from spring to summer with fertilizers for acid plants, like the one we can buy here.
  • Pruning: late winter. Remove dry, diseased or weak stems, and trim those that have grown too long.
  • Planting or transplanting time: in spring.
  • Rusticity: withstands cold and frosts down to -10ºC.
