Buganvilla

Characteristics of the Bougainvillea

Bougainvilleas are perennial or deciduous plants (depending on the climate) that belong to the genus Bougainvillea, which is native to the tropical forests of South America, but today it is cultivated in all temperate-warm regions of the world. And, although they can reach heights of up to 12 meters, they tolerate pruning very well. What's more, they produce a large number of flowers from spring to fall.

They resist the cold, but the frost hurts them. They are only grown outdoors all year round if the temperature does not drop below -4ºC. They can be in the sun or in semi-shade.

Clematis

Clematis or Clematis is a genus of vigorous and very fast growing climbing plants that have evergreen leaves. They are native to the warm and temperate regions of the northern hemisphere, and they produce their white, red, bluish or purple flowers depending on the species in spring-summer.

They resist frosts between -3ºC and -12ºC, and must be planted in areas where their stems are in semi-shade and their leaves and flowers are in the sun. If you don't have any such place, tell you that they live well also in semi-shade 🙂.

Climbing rose

Climbing rose

Climbing roses are plants that, apart from having thorns with which to go with a little care 🙂, produce very pretty flowers with a delicious scent from spring to almost fall. The most interesting thing is that they grow fast, they tolerate pruning well (in fact, you must prune them every year so that they flourish with health). They reach a height of about 5-7 meters, and are native to Asia, but there are also some species native to Europe, North America, and north-western Africa.

They resist frosts down to -12ºC without difficulty, although they are somewhat demanding in terms of location: in order to flourish, they need direct light.

How are climbing plants cared for?

Having a climbing plant can be a very beautiful experience, but only if it is cared for properly. Therefore, so that problems do not arise, we recommend taking care of them as follows:

Location

It will depend a lot on the species. Some, such as honeysuckle, bignonia or clematis, prefer sun, but there are others that prefer semi-shade, such as passiflora. So that there is no room for doubt, just look at where they are in a nursery, or ask us 🙂.

Earth

Again, it depends:

  • Flower pot: use fertile substrates, with good drainage. A good mix would be universal growing medium (for sale here) mixed with perlite (for sale here) in equal parts. In the case of wisteria and other acidophilic plants, use better coconut fiber (for sale here) or specific substrate for them (for sale here).
  • Garden: the land must be fertile, well drained. If they are acidic plants, the pH must be between 4 and 6.

Irrigation

Moderate, about 3-4 times a week in summer, and somewhat less the rest of the year. If possible, use rainwater or lime-free water, especially if the vines are acidophilic, such as wisteria.

Subscriber

From early spring to late summer They must be paid with organic fertilizers, using liquids if they are potted. A highly recommended fertilizer is guano (for sale here), due to its high nutrient content and rapid effectiveness. But there are others, such as seaweed compost (for sale here), or homemade ones like egg and banana peels for example.

Pruning

In general, they are pruned either at the end of winter, or after flowering. You have to remove dry, diseased, weak branches and those that are broken, and shorten those that are growing too much.

Planting or transplanting time

In spring, when the weather begins to improve and the minimum temperature is above 10ºC.

If you have them in a pot, move them to a larger one every two years.
