Climbing roses are very easy to grow, as are rose bushes that do not climb. Of course, they have a clear difference and that is that the first they need to have a support that they can climb. In this sense, it is very common to place them near small wooden or plastic lattices to cover them with leaves and, above all, beautiful flowers that will sprout from spring to late summer or even autumn if you live in a mild climate.

For the rest, it is recommended to place them in an area where it is in direct sunlight, although can grow and bloom in semi-shade provided they have plenty of light.

Another issue that we cannot forget is irrigation. Rose bushes are plants that need a lot of water, but always avoiding that the substrate is flooded. Taking this into account, they should be watered every 3-4 days in summer, and every 6-7 the rest of the year. During the growing season, that is, from spring to late summer, it is highly advisable to fertilize them with a mineral fertilizer for flowering plants, or if you prefer, with organic fertilizers, such as guano or algae extract.

To keep your growth controlled, prune in late winter / early spring, lowering their height as much as desired. Likewise, it is also important to remove the roses once they wither; this way we will get more to sprout.

If we talk about pests, the ones that affect them the most are aphids, which are deposited in the flower buds before they open. Also the red spiders and mealybugs cottony they can harm them. One way to avoid this is by doing preventive treatments with Neem oil, but if the plague is advanced it will be better to treat them with chemical insecticides, such as Chlorpyrifos.

  • You must sharpen and disinfect  all the tools you use are for the wedding.
  • Eliminate bad shoots.

  • So that the oldest shoots do not suffer you can always prune them from the base. You should not do it at ground level as it would be excessive. In the case of the newer side shoots, you can prune them about a third of the tip to stimulate their growth and branching.

Hello, see Is the wooden pot useful for planting the climbing rose or is another material more recommended?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Maritza.

Wooden pots need annual treatments (with wood oil) to resist the impact of sun, wind, and rain. But if you are willing to do those treatments and it has a hole in the base for the water to come out, then you can have a climbing rose in it.

      Regards!

Where is the bud to be able to prune well.

I would like to have a climbing rose bush in a large pot, on my terrace which is oriented NORTH-WEST, that is, I have sun for a little while in the morning and no more, that is perfect clarity. Is it right to put a rosebush?
I would also like to have a climbing jasmine, in the same situation, would it be a good place?
    Thank you.

I love and appreciate your writing with everything described.

      Hi Benedict.
The buds are like small bumps that protrude from the branch.

Yes, both the rosebush and the jasmine will be fine in that place 🙂

      Greetings.
