Curiosities about general gardening

Flower

In the world of gardening we can find many things that are very curious to us. Especially if we have been in this world for a short time, we often find certain plants interesting and incredible. In this article we will give you answers to the most asked questions, in addition to giving you advice for the care of your plants.

Sometimes what we think is normal really is a sign that there is something in the crop that is failing; or vice versa, that is, what we think is a sign that there is something that is damaging our precious plant, is actually something normal.

Conifer

1.- What are those little white balls on the substrate?

The white balls are a very good material that facilitates the drainage of the water. It is the pearl. Ideal for making substrate mixes for cacti, carnivorous plants, even ferns and aquatic plants. It is especially recommended when we are not sure if we are going to control the irrigation well, to avoid root problems.

2.- And the balls that look like eggs at the base of the pot?

In this case it could be two things: spider or fungus eggs. In both cases it is important to remove them, and make some changes to the crop:

  • If you have the pot inside a plate, it will be filled with pearlite or clay pellets to avoid direct contact of the roots with puddled water.
  • If the substrate is soaked (and unless it is not aquatic plants), it will be removed from the pot, will be wrapped with cotton or some absorbent material, and it will be planted again, without watering.
  • To prevent them from reappearing fungicide and / or miticide will be applied, the substrate will be stirred a little with a toothpick and it will be watered less.

3.- With what water are carnivorous plants watered?

Carnivorous plants can be watered with: distilled water, osmosis water or rain water. Tap water can only be used if it is very soft, that is, only if it is fit for human consumption.

Geraniums

4.- My geraniums have holes in the stems. How to treat them?

Geraniums are very popular plants in gardens, but unfortunately pests are also very common, and among them there is one that affects them a lot and can be serious: the famous green worms. They are actually green larvae. They enter the stems through the flowers, making small round holes in them.

The first visible symptom must be treated, even as prevention, with a few drops of 10% cypermethrin, diluted in a liter of water. A single application is usually sufficient.

5.- How can I lower the pH of the water?

If you have plants that need water with a low pH, and the tap water is very hard, you can add a few drops of vinegar or lemon to irrigation water. To ensure that they will not lack for anything, you can fertilize them every week or every 15 days with a specific fertilizer for acidic plants.
