Curiosities about trees

Jacaranda

You could say that they are the silent »rulers» of planet Earth, since with each one of them coexist a great variety of animals and insects. In effect, each tree constitutes an ecosystem in itself.

But also, today Sunday I would like to tell you curiosities about trees. Some will surprise you, and others will help you choose the most suitable species for your garden according to your needs. Do you want to prove it? Ahead.

Rapid growth = Short life expectancy

Acacia

This may be difficult to accept, since there are many species whose flowers are simply beautiful. But unfortunately this is the case: not all trees have the same life expectancy. In fact, those that have a faster growth such as Acacia, Albizia, Robinia, Leucaena, Populus, ... among others, do not usually live more than a few decades (three to five, tops). These trees usually start to bloom at a very young age (many a few months after germinating), since for them, since they live so little, it is very urgent to start having offspring as soon as possible.

Slow growth = Long life expectancy

Quercus

At the other extreme we have trees that live for hundreds and even a few thousand years, but that "against them" (rather in ours, since in habitat means having a greater resistance to diseases) have a slow growth. Species like oaks, beeches, and many conifers (Sequoia, Pinus, etc.) rank high on the list of long-lived trees.

Trees against climate change

Pine

Trees are our main allies against the consequences of climate change, since they prevent soil erosion, and also maintain a pleasant temperature under their shade, facilitating that many animals and insects can protect themselves from the scorching sun. Therefore, it is necessary to take care of the forests, making good use of them.
