russula vesca

Do you like going to pick mushrooms in the field? Without a doubt, this is an activity that can be very interesting, especially when you take a guide with you or have installed one on your mobile. application to help you identify them. But in addition to these tools, you also have this blog. In fact, this time we are going to talk to you about the edible russulas.

Although there are some of the genus that are a little different, the species that we are going to show you here are suitable for human consumption, so you will not have to worry about anything.

What is its habitat?

Edible russulas are native to the temperate regions of the world, especially the Old Continent. They grow in coniferous, deciduous or mixed forests. So they are adapted to living in areas where rainfall is abundant, summers rather mild and winters cold with frosts.

In addition, appear from spring to fall, so they are one of the first of the year.

As they are?

They are very characteristic fungi: the mushroom or fruiting body can measure up to 11cm in height. They have a hat between 5 and 10 centimeters in diameter, with hemispherical form in the young specimens, and convex and flattened in the adults.

The cuticle is variable reddish to reddish-brown in color, darker in the center. This can be easily separated. The blades are 4 to 9 millimeters wide, bifurcate near the stem, and are somewhat greasy to the touch. When young, they are white in color, but as they mature they turn cream in color.

The foot measures between 1,5 and 2,5cm in diameter and between 3 and 10cm in height. It can be fusiform or cylindrical in shape. It is hard and white in color, somewhat yellowish or brownish at the base.

What are the NON-edible Russula species?

Of all that there are, there are only three species of Russula that should not be eaten under any circumstances for their taste (they are bitter or sour):

  • Emetic russula: he has an orange hat, very striking.
  • Russula subnigricans: his hat is cream-colored, darker in the center.
  • Russula sardonia: has purple hat and foot.

The symptoms are not that they are extremely serious, but they can cause vomiting, abdominal pain and general discomfort.

The page https://www.jardineriaon.com/russulas-comestibles.html It is extremely confusing since in principle it is titled as edible russulas, but you really cite some of those that are not

      Hello Jose.

Of course, at the end of the article we indicate some that are not edible so that the text is more complete.
Anyway, if we have made a mistake with any species, please tell us and we will correct it.

      Regards!
