Euryops, the most drought-resistant flowering plant

The flowers of the Euryops are yellow

El Euryops it is one of the most drought resistant flowering plants. And I tell you from experience. I have a specimen in the garden that is cared for only a few months after I planted it and, do you know the most interesting thing? In my area 350mm of rain falls a year, concentrated in spring and especially in autumn.

In addition, it looks great since it can reach a height of up to 1,5 meters, which is interesting when you are looking for really decorative plants to create beautiful borders. Do you want to know him better? : )

Origin and characteristics

View of the Euryops plant in bloom

The Euryops, known as gray daisy or yellow daisy, It is a woody shrub native to South Africa that reaches a height of 1,5 meters. Its leaves are of spectacular grayish color, and are 40 to 100mm long. The flowers are very reminiscent of daisies, and they bloom practically all year round except in summer. These arise from terminal clusters that have a peduncle (stem that joins the flower with the plant) 7 to 10 cm long. They are hermaphrodites. The fruit contains a single seed.

Its growth rate is quite fast, being able to reach adult height in just two years.

What are their cares?

The Euryops is a very easy plant to care for

If you want to get a copy, we recommend providing the following care:

Location

Place your Euryops outside, in a place where it receives direct sunlight. It can also be in semi-shade as long as it has more light than shade.

Earth

  • Flower pot: plant in universal cultivation substrate mixed with 30% perlite.
  • Garden: grows on all types of soils, even those that have a tendency to erosion.

Irrigation

If it is going to be in a pot, it will need 2-3 waterings a week during the summer and every 5-6 days the rest of the year. Conversely, if it is going to be in the garden it will be enough if you give it some other watering during the first year.

Subscriber

From spring to early autumn it can be paid with Organic fertilizers, like the manure of herbivorous animals, guano, compost, tea bags, and even vegetables that are no longer suitable for consumption. Of course, if you are going to have it in a pot, use liquid fertilizers and follow the instructions specified on the container to avoid problems.

Multiplication

Euryops is easily multiplied by cuttings in spring. For it, proceed as follows:

  1. First, a branch that measures at least 20 centimeters must be cut with scissors previously disinfected with pharmacy alcohol.
  2. Second, the base of the cutting is impregnated with powdered rooting hormones or homemade rooting agents.
  3. Third, it is planted in a pot with a universal growing medium.
  4. Fourth, a little copper or sulfur is sprinkled to prevent the appearance of fungi.
  5. Fifth, the pot is watered and placed outside, in semi-shade.

If everything goes fine, you will have a new copy after 2 monthsBut you will have to leave it in that pot until roots grow out of the drainage holes.

Plagues and diseases

The Euryops pectinatus is one of the most popular species

He has no problems, but they can attack him sometime snails, although it is nothing serious 🙂. They can always be picked up and carried about 100 meters away from the plants.

What can happen is that they attack you mushrooms if overwatered. The symptoms are:

  • Yellowish leaves
  • Root system rot
  • Growth arrest
  • Flower abortion
  • Appearance »sad» of the plant

If you suspect that you have a fungal disease, reduce your risks and treat it with a fungicide.

Pruning

Annual trimming must be done in spring, preferably when it is not in flower, in order to give it a rounded shape.

Rusticity

The Euryops is well resistant to cold and frost of up to -8ºC, so that you will not have problems. If you live in an area where winters are colder, protect it with greenhouse plastic or anti-frost fabric.

What uses is it given and where is it bought?

The Euryops flower looks like a yellow daisy

The Euryops is a plant that it is used as an ornamental, either in pots or planters, or in the gardens. It is very well planted both alone and in groups, and of course on the edges of roads. In addition, it attracts beneficial insects, such as bees and butterflies, so it is interesting to have it near the garden so that they can pollinate the flowers of horticultural plants.

You can buy it at any nursery or garden store. It is also very possible that you will find it in the markets of the towns during the warm months of the year. Its price is around 5-6 euros in a 2,5 liter pot.

And with this we are done. What did you think of this plant? As we have seen, having a well-cared for specimen is not difficult; in fact, it is so simple that we consider it suitable for beginners. So if you don't have much experience or time to care for plants, put a Euryops in your life 😉.

Thank you very much for explaining it so well. We bought a plot and it was there alone. I have looked for its name, because I like to know what the plants I have are called. Seeing a yellow flower, I have recognized it. Will I put more on the way?
