If you want to have a garden or some corners of it always full of life, it is very interesting to put bushes that remain with leaves throughout the year, something that fortunately is quite easy to achieve. There are many species that meet this characteristic, and that can also be pruned to keep them in the desired shape.

So why not give them a try? Whether you already have your garden done or not, surely you have some space left to plant evergreen shrubs, like the ones we are going to show you below.

Common boxwood

El common boxwood, whose scientific name is Buxus sempervirens, is a perennial shrub native to Europe. It does not usually exceed 4 meters, although exceptionally and as long as it is allowed to grow freely it can reach 12 meters. Its leaves are small, up to 3 centimeters, dark green on the upper side and lighter on the underside.

It supports pruning very well, and is excellent for both sun and semi-shadow corners. It resists frosts down to -18ºC.

Ashen

The ash, whose scientific name is Leucophyllum frutescens, is one of the garden shrubs native to America, specifically this one is from Mexico and the southwestern United States. Reaches a height of 2-3 meters, and its leaves are green and hairy. The flowers are purple, and are grouped in inflorescences.

It is an interesting species for corners exposed to the sun, as it also resists frosts down to -12ºC.

dodonea

La dodona, whose scientific name is dodonaea viscosa, is a shrub or small tree native to South Africa. It grows up to 5 meters in height, and its leaves are greenish except in winter when they are purple. The flowers are capsule-shaped, and creamy-white.

It must be located in a sunny exposition, and avoiding placing it on compact and / or poorly drained soils. Resists up to -4ºC.

Common juniper

El common juniper, whose scientific name is Juniperus communis, is a nonflowering perennial shrub native to mountainous regions of North America, Europe, and Asia. Normally grows between 1 and 2 meters, but exceptionally it can reach 10 meters. Its leaves are needle-shaped and green in color.

Highly recommended for gardens that enjoy cold winters, as it resists cold and frost down to -18ºC. However, it also grows without problems in warmer areas, such as the Mediterranean.

Red swab

The red swab, also known as pipe cleaner or brush tree, and whose scientific name is Callistemon citrinus, is a perennial outdoor plant native to Australia. It grows between 2 and 10 meters in height, and has leaves 3 to 7 centimeters long of green color. Its flowers are red, purple-red or lilac, and they are grouped in inflorescences in the shape of a tube brush, which is where one of the names comes from.

It can be pruned, but without abuse. It is better to avoid drastic cutting of branches, although you can cut them little by little. It lives in full sun, and resists up to -7ºC.

False hibiscus

The false hibiscus, whose scientific name is Allyogyne huegelii, is a shrub native to western Australia. Reaches a maximum height of 2 meters, and its leaves are small and greenish. The flowers are violet or lilac.

It lives well both in full sun and in semi-shade, and it resists frosts down to -5ºC.

La wax flower, whose scientific name is Chamelaucium uncinatum, is one of the best sun hardy flowering shrubs to be found in Western Australia. It grows to a height between 0,5 and 4 meters, and has acicular leaves of 1 centimeter. The flowers are small, about 2 centimeters, pink or purple.

It is a plant that loves the sun, does not need much maintenance, and as if that were not enough, it resists frosts down to -7ºC.

La photinia, whose scientific name is Photinia glabra, is a shrub or small tree native to China. It grows between 3 and 5 meters, although it can reach 7 meters in height. The leaves are oblong-obovate, 5 to 9 centimeters long, and green. The flowers are grouped in corymbs, and are white.

Plámtala in a protected corner of the star king, in an area where the minimum annual temperature is equal to or greater than -12ºC.

Leptosperm

El leptosperm, whose scientific name is Leptospermum scoparium, is a sun-hardy flowering shrub native to Oceania and Indonesia. Reaches a height of 2 meters, with small, lanceolate, dark green leaves. The flowers are also small, about 1 centimeter, and pink or white.

You have to put it in a place where the sun shines all day, or if not, it is in a bright area. Resists cold and frost down to -5ºC.
