fast growing plants

There are many plants that grow fast

On some occasions, plants that grow fast are sought in order, for example, to have a 'mature' garden as soon as possible, that is, one in which the trees and the rest of the species have reached a point where they have achieved, not not only acclimatize to the place, but also grow large enough to reach adulthood. They are also a favorite when you want to quickly beautify a balcony, patio or terrace.

But not always the varieties that are chosen are the most suitable. They may grow fast, yes, but are they really the best option to have in the place that interests us? If you want to know which fast-growing plants we recommend, take a look at our selection.

acacia saligna (Blue Leaf Acacia)

La acacia saligna, also known as blue mimosa, is an evergreen tree that can grow up to 1 meter a year. It reaches a height of 9 meters, but the most normal thing is that it remains as a 5-meter tree. Its crown is wide, 3-4 meters long, and is made up of dark green lanceolate leaves.

Its trunk is thick, about 40-60 centimeters maximum, so it is interesting to plant it in medium or, of course, large gardens. Tolerates drought and frost down to -7ºC, but it must be planted at a minimum distance of 5 meters from pipes and soils with light paving.

Aesculus hippocastanum (Horse chestnut)

The Horse Chestnut is a deciduous tree and very tall

El horse chestnut It is a deciduous tree that reaches 30 meters in height, and that reaches a crown of 4-5 meters in diameter. It is, therefore, a large plant, which will look great in large gardens, and not so much in small ones, since in them it may be necessary to prune it so that it does not end up shading the entire place. It grows about 30-60 centimeters each year.

But yes, it must be at a minimum distance of five meters from the area where the pipes have been laidotherwise problems would arise. It is a species very resistant to frost, tolerating -18ºC, but it must live in temperate regions where it rains frequently, since it does not tolerate drought. In the Mediterranean, for example, I would live very well if it weren't for the fact that there is a very marked dry season, which coincides with summer.

Brachychiton acerifolius (Tree of fire)

El fire tree It is a deciduous or semi-evergreen plant -depending on the climate- of fast growth, which reaches a height of between 8 and 15 meters, whose trunk usually grows straight but can bend slightly with age. In spring it produces bright red flowers before the leaves sprout.

It is widely grown in warm and temperate regions., as it grows fast (it does so at a rate of 30-50 centimeters/year), it resists drought and even withstands light frosts down to -2ºC.

Campanula persicifolia (Bell)

Bellflower is a herbaceous perennial

the bell It is a beautiful perennial herbaceous plant that reaches a height of 70 centimeters, with a growth rate of 30-35 centimeters per season. It develops stems with lanceolate to obovate green leaves and bell-shaped violet-blue or white flowers during spring and summer.

Its cultivation in pots and planters is very easy, since you just have to put it in a sunny place and water it from time to time. But in a garden, for example in a flowerbed with other flowers, it will be perfect.

Chlorophytum comosum (Headband)

La tape It is a herbaceous plant that, although it is small since it does not exceed 30 centimeters in height and 40 centimeters in width, produces many runners (children that sprout from stems which emerge from the center of the rosette of leaves) from an early age. For this reason, it is easy that if a stolon that is a few weeks old is planted in a pot, for example, it will grow as much as the mother in about a year.

Not being very big It is one of the most loved to have indoors, where it grows very well in those rooms where a lot of natural light enters.. But you should also know that it is highly recommended to grow it in a garden, in the shade, as long as there are no frosts or they are very weak and occasional, and do not last long. I have one on the ground, near a wall, and it has withstood up to -1.5ºC without being damaged, but I do not advise leaving it outside if the temperature is lower.

Citrus x lemon (Lemon Tree)

The lemon tree is an evergreen fruit tree

El lemon Tree it is a very popular fruit tree (rather a small tree) in the garden, but also on terraces and patios. It is a plant that smells good even if it is not even blooming, and that also grows approximately 30 centimeters a year if you have the chance. It reaches 4-5 meters, and the only drawback is that its branches are protected with thorns.

But otherwise, it is a very grateful plant, which can be in a pot for its entire life if placed in a sunny place. It has no invasive roots, so it is also ideal for decorating small gardens. It resists frost down to -4ºC.

Equisetum hyemale (Winter horsetail, horsetail)

El Equisetum hyemale It is a rhizomatous plant that has very thin green stems 90 centimeters high by less than 1 centimeter thick. It grows very fast if it is in a soil that remains moist always. And it is that although it is semi-aquatic, that is, it cannot live in dry soil. For this reason, it is very interesting to put it on the edge of the pond, for example, or in pots with drainage holes to which we have put a saucer underneath.

It needs direct sun and frequent watering.. In this way it will grow at a rate of about 30 or 40 centimeters per year. It resists cold and frost down to -18ºC.

Hydrangea macrophylla (Hydrangea)

Hydrangeas are fast growing shrubs.

La hydrangea It is one of the most popular shrubs, both in the decoration of gardens and terraces or patios. It grows about 30 centimeters each season, reaching a maximum of 1 meter, and also blooms for several months a year. Its flowers are terminal inflorescences that, although they have no aroma, measuring about 4 centimeters in diameter, make the place where they are look very pretty.

But it is an acid plant, that is, can only grow in soils whose pH is between 4 and 6. Therefore, if you have alkaline soil, it is best to grow it in a pot with a specific substrate for these plants, or with coconut fiber.

Lavender (Lavender)

Lavender is a plant that grows at a good rate

La lavender essence It is an aromatic plant that it can measure 1 meter in height by more or less the same in width, and that it can also reach these dimensions in no more than 3 years since the seed was sown. Its flowers bloom throughout the spring or summer -depending on the variety-, and are lavender in color.

It is a bush or sub-shrub widely used to decorate Mediterranean-style gardens, since resists drought and heat very well typical of that region, where there can be maximum temperatures of 38-40ºC. And it is not afraid of the cold either: it supports up to -7ºC.

Robust Washingtonia (Fan Leaf Palm)

Washingtonia robusta are tall palm trees

Few palms grow as fast as the Washingtonia, which can grow at a rate of between 50 centimeters and 1 meter per year. Although both W. robusta and W. filifera and the hybrid W. filibusta require the same care, for this selection we opted for the W. robust for having a less thick trunk. And it is that unlike the W. filifera, can measure about 40 centimeters thick, and not 70cm. Of course, keep in mind that its leaves, which are fan-shaped, measure around 1 meter when they are adults. The maximum height it reaches is 35 meters.

It does not have aggressive roots (no palm tree does), but it does it is important that it is planted at a minimum distance of one meter from walls and wallsOtherwise, as it gained height, it would tend to grow leaning forward, and if the wind were to blow strongly, it could drop it. It needs sun (direct), and a mild-temperate climate. It tolerates -5ºC, but lives better in regions where the winters are somewhat warmer.

Which of these fast-growing plants did you like the most?
