7 plants for fences

Tall hedges

One of the most important parts of the garden is the hedge. Without it, we could not have privacy nor could we divide the different sections of our green space. And for this, shrubs, especially evergreen ones, are essential.

But What are the most suitable fence plants?

Trees

Normally the trees are recommended to be put as isolated specimens or in separate groups so that they can develop well and the person can contemplate them in all their splendor. But the reality is that when you want to make tall hedges you can also count on them.

Brachychiton populneus

This is a fast growing evergreen tree that I think is one of the most desirable to be honest. It resists drought, grows fast and has no known pests or has a tendency to get sick. The only thing it needs are regular waterings during the first year that it is planted, and from the second year you will be able to space out the waterings until a time comes when you will not need to water it. Withstands cold and frost up to -4ºC.

betulus carpinus

Hornbeam is a deciduous tree that can be pruned on a regular basis. It grows up to 30 meters in height, although its branches can be cut back to 4-5 meters, or even a little less. It is a very decorative species, which likes the sun and always have a little water within reach. Resists frost down to -15ºC.

Shrubbery

Shrubs are those plants that, unlike trees, tend to have multiple stems that branch from far below, often from ground level. Many of them produce very pretty flowers, others very bright colored leaves.

Laurus nobilis

Laurel is an evergreen shrub that, due to its resistance to drought, pruning, and high temperatures, is probably the species that is most cultivated in gardens where rainfall is scarce.. It grows up to 6-7 meters, but if it is formed as a hedge it does not usually exceed 2m.

syzygium

Syzygiums are evergreen trees and shrubs that, although they can reach heights of more than 15 meters, they support pruning well. The new leaves and the fruits of some species are very beautiful, with pink-reddish or lilac colors that will look great in the garden. What's more, they can be both in full sun and in semi-shade, and they resist strong frosts.

Bamboo

It may seem strange to you that it includes the fastest growing plants on the list, but the truth is that if you leave them a corner where they can grow they are very interesting.

Phyllostachys

Phyllostachys are the most widely used bamboos. They reach a height of 4-7 meters in a very short time (it can take 4-5 years if they have plenty of water). Its stems are very ornamental, and can be black, green or bicolor (yellow and green) depending on the species. They resist frosts down to -5ºC and high temperatures.

conifers

Conifers are exceptional plants: bring elegance and privacy to the garden, and that's not to mention that you can create windbreak hedges with them.

Chamaecyparis

The Chamaecyparis are plants that, although they are not yet easily available in nurseries, they are so beautiful that surely we will soon see more in the gardens. They grow up to 3-4 meters, so they can be used for medium-high fences. They resist frost without problems, but high temperatures of more than 30ºC can affect them.

cupressus

Cypress trees are used to create tall hedges, over 4 meters. They resist high temperatures of up to 35ºC and frost, and do not require much maintenance except for regular waterings every 3-4 days.

      Hi Mirta.
How long is your yard? I ask you because the magnolia is a large tree, which can grow up to 30 meters.
Lagunaria pattersonii is a smaller evergreen tree (7-10 meters) and produces lilac flowers.
      A greeting.

      Hello Jorge.
What is the climate in your area?

Laurel is a good option if the minimum temperature does not drop below -12ºC.

      A greeting.
