These plants belong to the botanical genus Gasteria, and are of the Xanthorrhoeaceae family, their Asphodeloideae family. Originally from South Africa, they bear a certain resemblance to the Haworthia, with whom they are related. There are about 20 different species, but all of them are suitable for potting inside the home, as they are sensitive to frost. They grow to a height that does not exceed 40cm, and as adults, most of them need a pot of 30-35cm in diameter to be able to grow and look pretty.

They have fleshy, dark green leaves. Some have white dots or spots distributed throughout the leaf, both on the upper side and on the underside. The flowers appear distributed in inflorescences up to 20cm high, orange-red in color. Its flowering season is in summer, when temperatures remain high, above 20ºC.

If we talk about cultivation, it is very simple, suitable for all those who like plantseven for children. They can grow equally well both in peat and on a porous substrate, such as perlite or river sand; Of course, if you live in a very rainy climate, I recommend that you opt for the latter, since if you plant it in peat, it could rot.

For the rest, place it in an area where it gets the sun for a few hours a day, and water it very occasionally: no more than twice a week. And if you want to reproduce it, you just have to wait for the suckers to have some 2cm long leaves at least, to extract the plant from the pot and to be able to separate the sucker.

In this way, you will have a healthy Gasteria that you can enjoy for many years. Do you have any at home?
