Gaura, the ideal plant to cover spaces

gaura lindheimeri

The plant that we are going to present to you on this occasion stands out for its rusticity and, especially, for its beautiful flowers. It is very adaptable, being able to plant indistinctly in the shade of the trees or in sunny expositions. Your name? gaura lindheimeri, gaura for friends 🙂.

Let's learn more at depth to this precious plant.

gura

Our protagonist belongs to the botanical family Oenotheraceae, and is originally from Boreal America. It is a perennial herbaceous plant that measures about 1m in height, and can reach one and a half meters if conditions are very favorable. It has long lanceolate leaves, about 8cm in length. The flowers, which appear from spring to fall, are arranged in spikes, and can be white or pink. The fruit is a kind of smooth and shiny nut that does not open when ripe, inside which are the seeds that, when ripe, measure about 5mm and have a more or less light brown color.

The Gaura is a very grateful plant that supports the cold and intense frosts of up to -15ºC. But unfortunately it does not like heat too much, so it is important that if you live in a warm climate, you plant it in a corner protected from direct sun. For the rest, you will not have to worry about the soil or the pH of the water, since it will grow just as well no matter where it is planted and what water it is watered with. The only thing to avoid is excess humidity, because if the soil is very flooded the roots could die from suffocation and, as a consequence, the plant would also perish. A) Yes, It will be watered 3 times a week in summer, and 1-2 / week the rest of the year.

Prune your Gaura in winter, after the risk of frost has passed. Cut the stems that have flowered level with the ground and lower the height to half so that I get more and more flowers. Likewise, you can take the opportunity to start fertilizing it with a universal fertilizer following the instructions specified on the package, or with organic fertilizers such as guano, worm castings or manure, adding about 100 grams every 2 months.
