Originally from tropical Africa, today it is present in all the hot climates of the world, where there are no frosts. Its scientific name is Tamarindus indica, and belongs to the Caesalpiniaceae family. The inflorescences, which appear in spring, are yellow and red. They are a real beauty because fill the tree with small flowers.

The fruit is an elongated pod inside which are approximately eight seeds. These, once they mature, are black.

Tamarind seeds

Tamarind is a tree that germinates quite well, but To increase the germination rate, I recommend that you put them in boiling water for 1 second and, immediately afterwards, put them in a glass of water at room temperature for 24 hours.. The next day, sow them in pots, putting a maximum of two in each with porous substrate, such as black peat and perlite in equal parts. In this way, you will ensure that your tree gets off to a 'good start'.

And by the way apply broad-spectrum fungicide to prevent fungus. Plants, and especially arboreal ones, during their first year of age can be affected by the aforementioned microorganisms. When that happens, it is very difficult to cure them, in fact it is recommended to throw it away and clean the pot well before it is used again. But with preventive fungicide treatments we won't have to worry about that 🙂.

When it is about 20-30cm tall you can plant it in the garden or keep it in the pot to work as a bonsai.
