It is a shrub or small tree native to the subtropical regions of the world whose scientific name is dodonaea viscosa. It is popularly known as dodonea or granadillo, and it is an evergreen plant (remains evergreen) reaching a maximum height of 5 meters. The leaves are alternate, lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, and measure 5-12 x 1,5-5cm.

The flowers are grouped in inflorescences in axillary or terminal cymes. The flowers are unisexual or bisexual appearing on the same plant or on different plants, and are yellowish, about 5mm in diameter. The fruit is a compressed capsule, about 2 x 2cm, with 2-3-4 wings. The seeds are lenticular and black.

  • Location: the granadillo must be outside, in full sun or in semi-shade.
  • Earth:
    • Pot: universal growing substrate.
    • Garden: it grows in all types of soils, it even lives well near the coast.
  • Irrigation: 3-4 times a week in summer, and a little less the rest of the year.
  • Subscriber: in spring and summer, with organic fertilizers once a month.
  • Pruning: at the end of winter, dry, diseased, weak or broken branches must be removed. It should also be used to cut those that have grown too much.
