Great gardens of the world | Fourth part

Butchart Gardens

The Garden of Versailles is one of the most beautiful in the world, although the Suan Nong Nooch Garden is not far behind, an incredible park in Thailand that has been designed inspired by the typical local style, or Keukenhof, that wonderful rainbow of colors that, covered with tulips, it stains the Dutch soil.

Some gardens in the world seem unreal, out of a fairy tale, surprise with their colors and their range of textures. They are magical, although behind the scenes there is a great author's work in which in many cases some of the world's great landscapers are involved. Sure, the results are lush and that's how it pays off.

The Shalimar Garden

To know one of these wonderful places you have to travel to Pakistan, a country in which one of the most spectacular gardens of all time is found, since it not only offers a variety of plants and flowers but is also an example of the persian style. This is the Shalimar Garden, recognized as Heritage by UNESCO in 1981.

Shalimar Garden

This place was built in the town of Lahore by order of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in honor of his wife who died at the time of giving birth to their son number 14. The works began in 1641 ending the following year and, unlike other gardens, it is surrounded by a long brick wall. Shalimar is rectangular in shape and has an area of 658 x 258 meters. In addition to countless species of trees, shrubs, plants and flowers, this garden stands out for its numerous monuments, fountains and typical Persian buildings. Another aspect for which Shalimar stands out is because it has been built on a slope and that is how it has three terraces with a difference between them of between 4 and 5 meters. In addition, there are 410 sources whose hydraulic systems have not yet been fully understood by specialists. What is known is that these fountains are responsible for the garden maintaining a certain freshness despite the warm summer climate of the place.

The Shalimar Garden is located very close to the town of bahhanpura, which is reached by an important national route, and about 5 kilometers from the city of Lahore.

Butchart Gardens

The story goes that this garden was born when a couple decided to start beautifying a quarry with their own hands to create a simple horticultural display that grew over the years. This occurred in 1904 in Canada and it was the germ of what today is one of the most spectacular gardens in the world, leading the top positions in the ranking.

Butchart Garden

In 1905 the pair created the Japanese Garden that survives today and that is how the Butcharts were gaining national fame. In the 20s, more than 50.000 visitors walked the trails of the place to discover the best of nature. In 1929 it was the turn of the Italian Garden, built on what were the couple's tennis courts and then the Rose Garden, which replaced an orchard they had. The set then gave rise to what are today the Butchart Gardens, an area of 50 hectares that is located in a privileged place and from where spectacular views are achieved.

A team made up of little more than 50 gardeners work full time in order to maintain the plants as they number more than a million copies with more than 700 varieties. The Best time to visit Butchart Gardens is from March to October, taking into account that then the flowering happens and it is when this beautiful place is tinted with a multicolored rainbow that could well be one of those fictional scenes of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
