Guzmania are epiphytic plants (that is, that grow on tree branches) belonging to the Bromeliaceae family, subfamily Tillandsioideae. They are native to Central America, the Antilles and South America. There are 212 accepted species, although 291 are described. In any case, there is a variety of beautiful plants that you can have in your home.

The leaves grow rosette, in such a way that the inflorescence can emerge from the center during the summer. After blooming, it dies, but not before making sure that it has left offspring: the suckers that you will see that come out of the base.

How do you take care of yourself?

This is a plant of tropical origin that needs a very bright place, warm And high humidity. However, we have to protect it from direct sunlight, as it could burn its leaves, and from drafts (both cold and warm).

To keep it pretty, you have to spray it daily or every other day with water with a very low or no lime content. Likewise, the irrigation water will also have to be acidic. We will water every 2-3 days in summer, and every 4-5 the rest of the year. You can pour water on the bud, changing it two or three times a month.

How to separate the suckers?

Once the inflorescence has withered and its leaves have dried, it will be time to remove the plant from the pot to be able to separate the suckers. To do this, we will only have to remove all the substrate that we can, and take one by one carefully so that its roots do not break. Then, we will plant them in individual pots with a substrate composed of 60% peat + 30% perlite + 10% worm humus (or any other organic fertilizer).

So you can enjoy your Guzmania or their children for many years.
