There are some plants that are so pretty that you really want to touch them, right? With the gynura that is something impossible to avoid, and that is that its leaves are covered by very short but very soft hairs.

It is a curious vegetable being that is very easy to care for and maintain, since it can be kept in a pot throughout its life.

Our protagonist is a plant whose scientific name is Gynura aurantiaca, but which is known more as Velvet Plant or Velvet Nettle. It is native to Southeast Asia, where can grow as a shrub up to 1 meter high, but it does not exceed 50cm if it is potted.

It is characterized by having evergreen, that is, it remains evergreen. During the warm months, it produces new leaves while the older ones dry out. They have slightly jagged margins, are covered by small villi and are velvety violet in color. It produces yellow flowers 1 to 2cm in diameter that give off an unpleasant smell.

How do you take care of yourself?

  • Location: regardless of whether you have it outdoors or indoors, it is important that it is in a very bright area but not directly exposed to the sun.
  • Substrate or soil: it must have very good drainage. If the soil in the garden is very compact, you can make a hole big enough to fit a block (of which are hollow), bury said block and plant the plant inside with universal growing substrate mixed with perlite.
  • Irrigation: it is advisable to water every 2-3 days in summer, and every 6-7 days the rest of the year. The leaves should not be wet.
  • Subscriber: from spring to the end of summer, it must be paid with a fertilizer for green plants, following the instructions specified on the package.
  • Pruning: the withered leaves must be removed, as well as the upper ones so that it produces lower stems and is more compact.
  • Transplant: six months after purchase and again each year, at the end of winter.
  • Multiplication: by stem cuttings in spring-summer. The cutting should measure about 10cm and have 2-3 leaves. The base is impregnated with rooting hormones and planted in a pot with universal growing medium.
  • Rusticity: supports up to -2ºC.
