There are several horticultural plants that, for one reason or another, as they grow must be trained so that they do not fall under their own weight, or that need to have some part protected from direct sun to bleach and, thus, have a better flavor to time to harvest them. Therefore, when we cultivate in the soil one of the things we can do is the hilled.

It is very easy to do, since with a hoe or a shooting element and some time we can get it, but it is important to know when is the best time, otherwise it would be of no use to us.

What is?

It is a task that consists of collect the soil from around the plant and pile it next to it making a mound, or in carballón if it is in rows. It is a very effective way to get much healthier crops, with better growth and, therefore, of better quality.

The height of the mounds or rows will depend on the size of the crop. For example, if it is a little plant about 20cm high, with a mound about 5cm high it may be enough; On the other hand, if it is a tomato plant of about 50cm, that mound will have to be about 10cm high.

When to do it and with what plants?

It is important to carry out the correct hilling after planting the plant in the ground, which must measure a minimum of 10cm, as it will be then when we start to water it. In addition, it will be necessary to continue doing it as they grow, to keep it straight.

The plants that grow well with this work are: beans, cauliflowers, peppers, green peas, potatoes, tomatoes, and with all those that want to be bleached (leaves or roots), such as thistles, leeks, fennel or white asparagus.
