Characteristics of the Cornus

Cornus florida specimen in flower

Nice specimen, right? Our protagonists They are an authentic natural wonder originating from the temperate regions of the world. It is called by many different names: wild cherry, dogwood, sanguine, cornizo or horn. It grows to a height of two to five meters, with deciduous leaves (fall in autumn-winter) and flowers that can appear in early spring or summer depending on the species.

Its growth rate is medium-fast if the growing conditions are adequate. In addition, they tolerate pruning very well, so we will not have to worry about anything, since if they grow too large we can trim those stems so that they have a more compact shape.

How are they cared for?

If we want to have one or more copies, we will have to provide them with the following care:

  • Location: outside, in semi-shade. In full sun the leaves burn quickly.
  • Soil or substrate: well drained, loose and with a low pH (acidic, between 4 and 6). In pot we can use substrate for acidophilic or kanuma plants.
  • Irrigation: frequent, especially in summer. We will water up to 4 times a week in the warmer months, and up to 2 the rest of the year. We will use rainwater, without lime or acidified (we will dilute the liquid of half a lemon in a liter of water).
  • Subscriber: During the warm months we can pay them with fertilizers for acidoyl plants, following the instructions specified on the packaging.
  • Planting or transplanting time: in spring.
