How are cacti cared for indoors?

Cactus

Of the cactus It is often said that they are of that type of plants that either like them a lot ... or they don't like them at all. And, for many, their thorns are the main attraction of these plants, but for others, that a plant can do harm ... of course not. If you are one of those people who like cacti, whether you live in a warm climate or not and want to have one (or more) decorating your home, we are going to give you a series of tips so that you can enjoy them. without having to worry about possible problems you may have. Coryphanta

For a cactus to live well indoors it will be necessary to take into account several things. We will start with:

Substratum

The substrate should favor drainage. One of the main problems of these plants indoors is having chosen an inappropriate substrate, which keeps moisture too long, something that could cause the roots to rot. To avoid this, we will choose a specific substrate for cacti, or we will make the following mixture: 40% black peat, 40% perlite and 20% vermiculite (approximately).

Flower pot

The pot will depend on how much we want to spend. The clay ones are more recommended, as they help the roots grow better, but the plastic ones are cheaper and more and more very ornamental models are being sold.

Location

The location should always be in a room where it has a lot of natural light, if possible direct. For example, at the entrance of the house, next to a window, ...

Irrigation and compost

Indoor cacti should be watered once a week or every fifteen days, allowing the substrate to dry completely before watering again. Remember that they are plants that can withstand drought, and more so if they are indoors. They can also be paid once a month from spring to autumn, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Cactus

Cacti are very ornamental plants that have proven to be very hardy and adaptable. With minimal care we can see them grow and to flourish for many years.

Very good your blog, I followed you recently, I have a question, how could I combat the scales on a cactus? with cultural control or extracts ... I understand that humidity is bad for them, how can I fight them?

    Hola!
We are glad that you like the blog. The blog is not mine, but I am part of the writing team, together with María Alm.
To treat the scales of your cactus you can try:
-Natural medicine. You can try one week and the next one if necessary, but do not mix them:
1.- A garlic is liquefied, the water is strained and a little mild soap is added to this water. And it is applied with a sprayer.
2.- With a swab to clean the ears and a little 70º alcohol (but very little, just to moisten the swab), the cactus is "cleaned".

-Chemical remedy (only if the natural ones have not worked for you): acaricide, using the manufacturer's recommendations.

The humidity actually hurts them. Therefore, the risks will have to be reduced while it is under treatment.

    Greetings and thanks for following!

How to water a small cactus, when and how much. THANK YOU, I love your teachings

      Hi Aida:
A small cactus should be watered often, since due to its small size you probably have it in a small pot. In spring and summer, depending on the area in which you are, the sun can be very intense, causing the substrate to dry very quickly. Even indoors he "drinks" more water than the rest of the year. That said, my advice is that you water about twice a week (Tuesday and Saturday, for example) while the good weather lasts, and that in autumn and winter you do it once every 7-10 days. As always, it will depend on the climate of each area: the drier and hotter it is, the more water it will need. But, important: you have to let the substrate dry completely between waterings, as they do not tolerate waterlogging.
To do this you can use anything: a watering can, or even a sprayer if it is really small. It is only necessary to wet what is the earth, since if the cactus were also wet, the sun could harm it due to the »magnifying glass effect».
We are glad that you like the blog, and you know, if you have any other questions, here we are 🙂
      Happy weekend!
