How are caraway seeds sown?

Caraway seeds

Caraway is an herb whose seeds have been consumed for its fantastic properties since the time of Charlemagne, who was born in the mid-700s and died in 814 AD. This man adored it so much that he claimed a series of fields to cultivate it alongside other useful plants.

But why is it a good idea to sow caraway seeds? Well, because it is one of our best allies to improve the health of the digestive system and to alleviate the symptoms of the soul, wounds and burns. So if you want to know how to do it, put on the gloves we started.

When are they sown?

Carum carvi plants

Caraway seeds are sown, preferably, in spring, although it can also be done in autumn if we live in an area with a warm climate with very weak frosts or no frosts.

Another option would be to do it in summer, but during this season you have to control the watering a lot since otherwise the land would quickly dry up and, with it, the seeds.

Carum carvi or caraway

On the floor

To get a high number of healthy plants it is highly recommended to sow the seeds directly into the ground. The way to proceed is as follows:

  1. First, weeds, stones and other debris that may be on the ground are removed.
  2. Second, it is leveled with a rake and the drip irrigation system is installed.
  3. Third, with a hoe, rows of about 5 cm deep are dug, leaving a distance between them of 20 cm.
  4. Fourth, the seeds are placed ensuring that they are a little distanced from each other.
  5. Fifth, they are covered with dirt.
  6. Sixth and last, it is watered consciously.

Keeping the soil moist they will germinate in 2-3 weeks.

In pot or planter

When there is no land available or they are going to be sown in summer or autumn, it is advisable to do so in a container with drainage holes. following these steps:

  1. The first thing to do is fill the container, which should measure at least 20cm in diameter, with universal growing medium.
  2. Afterwards, it is watered consciously.
  3. Then, the seeds are scattered, ensuring that they are a little separated from each other.
  4. They are then covered with a thin layer of substrate.
  5. Finally, it is watered, this time with a sprayer and the container is placed outside, in full sun.

Thus, they will germinate also in 2-3 weeks.

Good planting!
