How carnations reproduce

Dianthus

It has been admired and cultivated for many generations. Its flowers are so beautiful that they are still being cultivated today. In addition, they are often used to make bouquets, as the colors are very bright and cheerful.

Now why not get your own plants? If you want to know everything about how carnations reproduceYou're in luck, because today we are going to talk about how to get lots of carnations at a very low cost.

Dianthus seeds

Carnations, which belong to the genus Dianthus, are grown especially as annuals, but in milder climates they are considered lively. Its method of reproduction is through seeds, which you can see in the image above. In practically all nurseries and garden centers you will find seed envelopes, but if you have a friend or relative who has in his house or garden, ask him to give you some as a gift.

To obtain them, you just have to wait for the flower to pollinate, a task that pollinating insects such as bees will do during the spring. If you are lucky, in a short time the petals will fall, while the base of the flower swells a bit. Once it dries, we can pick it up and, when opening it, we will see the seeds already ripe.

The ideal is to sow it as soon as you have obtained the seeds, since although they can be kept for a year in a dry place, the germination rate will be lower than if they are sown this season. To start having your own carnations as soon as possible, you only need a seedbed (flowerpot, cork tray with small holes, ... whatever you can think of), substrate and water.

Once you have everything, you just have to fill the seedbed with substrate, place the seeds on its surface, cover them a little with soil, and water. And now that you've planted them, you just have to place them in a location in full sun, and wait a few days. As usual, in about 10-15 days with a temperature between 20 and 25 degrees they will begin to germinate. If you want to guarantee the survival of all the seedlings, do not forget to apply fungicide as a preventive.
