La Dracena It is one of those plants that look good both inside and outside of the home. Its leaves are very decorative, so much so that it is often used to decorate gardens of succulents and similar plants.

In the nurseries we find more and more varieties, so if you have taken one home, follow our advice to have it beautiful for many, many years.

Characteristics of the Drácena

The Dracena is actually the name given to the plants that belong to the Dracaenaceae family. The gender, Dracaena, comprises some 40 species of succulent trees and shrubs that live in Africa, South Asia, Central America and the Canary Islands. These beautiful plants are characterized by having a rather slow growth rate, and long, narrow leaves that usually end in a point.

Are closely matched with agaves, so much so that when they are young they are very reminiscent of those plants. An example is the Dracaena tamaranae that you can see in the image above. If you compare it to a agave tight, you will see that they are quite similar:

These plants are relatively easy to care for. If you don't believe me, follow our advice and then tell me 🙂:

  • Location: outside in semi-shade; indoors with lots of light.
  • Irrigation: 3 times a week in summer, a little less the rest of the year. The substrate must be allowed to dry before watering again.
  • Soil or substrate: it is important that it has good drainage. In a pot I recommend using a porous substrate such as the pomx, the akadama or the river sand.
  • Subscriber: fertilize with mineral fertilizers, such as Nitrofoska or Osmocote, in spring and summer.
  • Pruning: It's not necesary. Remove only dry leaves and wilted flowers.
  • Transplant: in spring.
  • Rusticity: they are generally not resistant to cold. The dracaena draco it supports occasional frosts down to -4ºC, but most prefer warm climates.

Enjoy your plant. 🙂
